Tykal_-_Outer_Dementias_of_A_Jungleholic_Part_1 (oldskool trip-hop jungle)

Over the past year or two, one of my primary obsessions has been hunting down that elusive creature: the late 96-early 97 "good" jungle tune. During that search, I discovered a trend of such tunes that appeared on trip-hop albums, or on vaguely defined, experimental electronica labels - tunes that took jungle as it existed in 94/95 and expanded on that theme, the kind of tunes I imagine would have been prevalent if the rising "drum and bass" scene hadn't turned its sights on minimalism and, for the most part, abandoned the manic nature of jungle past.

It's this trip-hop influenced jungle that forms the lifeblood of this mix.

Another characteristic I thought worth mentioning is that the mix has a decidedly international flavor: the Ant Hill tune is French, the Child's View tune is Japanese, the Minus 8 tune Swiss, the Bushman tune refixed by a Swede, and there's several U.S. artists holding their own alongside the masterful Brits.

As usual, I keep the focus largely centered around the amen break, yet I think the differences in usage and filtering vary enough to keep even those who've long grown tired of it interested.

In a larger context, this is the first in a series of mixes on the outer realms of jungle, jungle that found its niche in the most unlikely of places (such as on a Blondie album), and jungle that rests, unheard by enthusiasts, waiting for someone to find it and breathe some life back into it. Imagine a species dying out and these being the odd mutations that it underwent prior its either entering sleep for good, or hitting upon some new form that would allow it, once again, to catch like wildfire.

Cool concept for a mix!

Another track in this vein worth checking out is 'Free Jah' by Zend Avesta. It was on a compo called 'Sourcelab 2' back in 1996. manic drums but with a lovely swooshy synth on top. good stuff!

thanks for that recommendation. funnily enough, i discovered that track while doing the research for this mix, and plan on using it for a pre-drumfunk drumfunk set at some point in the future.
