Whenever they do these best of they feel they have to add the best of someone that has a solid following like those above so they cover all of the artists who had a solid impact. Otherwise pretty solid gmos wrote:
TIMWhenever they do these best of they feel they have to add the best of someone that has a solid following like those above so they cover all of the artists who had a solid impact. not really, he left out AFX, Autechre and Dave Clarke for that very reason. I know you're not a fan of Surgeon and co, but I'd have been pretty shocked if he didn't make the list, he's a huge part of underground UK techno and he plays the Bleep parties a lot so I'd say it's more than just pandering. gmos wrote:

I like some Surgeon stuff. Regis not really a fan of. The make could have easily done 2 records plus from each Luke Slater and B12 that are much better than that regis record. If that regis record is picked Red 1 should have been in the list in there too. Shouldn't Dave Angel made this list? Also seems to be missing Warp's influence no? TIM wrote:

Pretty good list with some great tunes but lists are always bollocks because no 2 people with ever agree on a top 20 of anything. Personally i could think of at least 10 - 15 that should be in there instead and i'm sure some on here would have a whole different top 20. The Luke slater and Reload albums are ace though ;)

I mean the list could go on & on. In the world of techno, you could bring the U.K.'s finest and they would represent as well as anyone else. That being said, the French also would fair very well. chischis wrote:

Thanks for your feedback on the article. Yes, it's only 20 records so I was always going to be limited in what I could put in, and with anything of this nature it is ultimately a personal view. I did avoid Warp records as a whole because I feel that Warp has had the deserved coverage, kudos and acclaim for the last 20 years or so, so why give it another pat on the back when there are a host of other producers who perhaps might have missed out on an article of this nature. The same goes for FSOL, Dave Clarke etc. On reflection there are some records that I might have replaced - i.e the Andrew McLauchlan one, but I also wanted it to stretch across the decade, and after 1996 things do get decidedly patchy with regard to good quality UK Techno, so a bit of balance is required. It is not meant to be a definitive list, but a personal one (I'm from London which means that it was always going to be a bit Lost-centric). Oh and the good Forgemasters release is from '89 so it doesn't count. AtomicCow wrote:

Don't feel bad about including "Love Story", that track is a bomb. Very few other techno tracks that have melodies that good...and improvisations? Forget about it. It's so fluid. And that Latin sample. Truly a bright spot in that whole tribal techno quagmire.

So happy I discovered the Lost label. I am on a mission to collect them all, one of the few labels I can say that about. They just have that pure sound - 100% techno but not cliche. I like the delay that the put on it, brings to mind a huge hangar. Tkon wrote:
How so, in my mind they fair pretty badly. The U.K, Dutch, Germans, Belgians and even the Italians are way ahead of the French regarding techno. Saying that one of my favourite artists is French - Jean Michel Jarre - my first vinyl purchase in 1983 being 1 of his lp's but as a whole they are pretty poorly represented in the electronic field especially when you regard the population. Nations with a fraction of their population are much better i think. doors wrote:

I honestly don't rate any of those guys highly, Garnier and Scan X made a few ok tunes but compared to other much smaller countries the French would be far down my list for top techno tunes. Don't forget we are talking over 65 million people when compared to the Dutch or Belgians and with roughly the same as the U.K. which musically has been far far superior. cthulhu303 wrote:

Remember that the French have a very idiosyncratic view in general on popular music and culture since the end of the War.
