The concept of "varannan" (every other). Have you tried it?Stormbringer wrote:
Some years ago I got an idea together with my girlfriend (not on Discogs btw). We're both very interested in many different genres of music and we have some pretty large collections (+5000 & +1500 records).

As you perhaps can imagine... it was a problem to decide what to play. Even though we have similar taste it's far from identical. We said to each other: "Why not play "varannan låt" (translation from Swedish to English: every other song)?" That was the general idea anway at the beginning. *thinking... remembering more facts about it* The very first time was when Maria (read: my girlfriend) had a birthday party when she became 30 (she's now 37). With the invitations to the birthday party we sent a note that people should either bring their favourite records or mail us what they wanted to hear at the party. That didn't work out so good because most people in general aren't interested in music in the same way as we are. To be honest... most people don't care about music at all. And even though I already knew THAT, it was proven to me once more because the visitors to that party was just as ignorant as most people are in general. After that first failure we tried it ourselves in stead. In the beginning we used a form that we now call "Varannan Collection" that means that you pick every other track from your collection. That requires you to either have a pathetically small collection so it can be moved around or that you live together with the person that your doing it with. Even though we lived together (at the time, we're now "särbo" (translation: still together but living in our own separate flats)) it was always hard to get a nice flow. It took too long to fetch/look for the track you wanted to play. After a while we decided that you had to pick out the records in advance so that we could minimize the time it took before the next track was played. Most of the time we now either have a limit of 20 or 30 records (it could be vinyls, CD's, cassettes, DVD's, minidiscs etc) that you should pick out before you start to play any records. You can then pick any tracks on those. We've then tried this with a lot of people and it works really well with everyone that's really interested in music. The people that aren't interested enough don't understand what's fun doing it. The big thing isn't just to play any track as soon as it's your turn. That would be really boring. In stead it's more fun to try to follow the previous musical choice by playing something similar. To be able to do that you must plan very carefully what to bring to the "varannan party". When I do it with Maria I never know for sure what to expect and that is really cool. We've done it so many times no that we've created some words to describe some aspects of it. 1. Follow = Play something similar. 2. Ignore = Ignore the choice of the previous participant. You play what you want without any thought of matching the music that was played before you. 3. Nude = Even though you want to... you have nothing to play that is even remotly similar. 4. Counter = You play something even harder or something better or something that creates more "hands in the air" etc. 5. Terrorize = You play something that you KNOW all or some of the other participants are going to absolutely hate. I know of at least one occasion when some oggers (without me) had a "varannan session". Read the party reports made by kompressorkanonen and C303 here. The rule of playing one track from the beginning to end is nice in theory but if you're six people that are going to do it for a long time it isn't going to be fun. When we do it now we have a rule that you should avoid to play a track more than five minutes unless you've earnt that time by playing shorter tracks previously during the session. Is it fun? YES! Please post your-tracklists if you try it! easy_e wrote:
Damn, it is going to be hard to find back the complete tracklist of Tördon!

Tried it with cthulhu303, although we weren't strict about every other record. We just took turns while the other was hunting for the right vinyls to play next. So sometimes 3 each back to back sometimes 2 or something like that! Phatman_G wrote:

Fun as hell. It's like a competition, but when we speak electronic music Storm always wins... I have got some secret tunes hidden which he doesn't know I have so next time I'll kick butt! ;) Beer is also a perfect ingredience. :)) Brad.R wrote:
another interesting thing to do is pick two totally different records like say a Namlook ambient record and a gabber record, and have a tag-team where you try to get from point a to point b smoothly.

Stormbringer: Etnica "Intense Visitation" from Tribute / Intense Visitation I bought this some months ago but its rarity and the price I had to pay for it does prevent me from playing it :-D I've actually only played it once before! Mini (AKA Maria... she's only 1:55 tall) Dead Kennedys "Viva Las Vegas" from Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables She played this track in tribute to the evening (read: ESC). The Swedish contribution (which is really bad) also is about Las Vegas. Maria played a track from this album the last time we had a "varannan" session at Vinylmania-c's place. She then played "Holiday In Cambodia". It took me only seconds to realize that the band that I thought did the original version only did a cover of it! I'm talking about Organic? :-D Stormbringer Massive Attack "Danny The Dog" from Danny The Dog We both like Massive Attack but this is so rare that I knew that she hadn't heard it before. We used to live together for eight years or so and we've done this so many times already that it's hard to surprise eachother. Mini Fun-Da-Mental "Wandering Soul" from There Shall Be Love! Maria is very keen on the Asian sound vs. the European sound. I must confess that I've also been influenced by her. If you want a great record in the genre then check out MIDIval PunditZ. We've played it so much during our "varannan" sessions that we can't use it anymore :-D Stormbringer Sutekh "Miasma" from Miasma EP Great minimal groovy techno. I wish I had some more stuff made by this artist. Mini Dia Psalma "Vemodsvals" from Efter Allt A touch och Swedish Folk Music combined with Punk Rock. It was very popular in Sweden in the mid-nineties. Stormbringer Slayer "Raining Blood" from another edition of Decade Of Aggression Live Yes, I'm quite lazy sometimes and I have a lot of releases to submit (about 1000 or so). I brought this for three reasons: 1. I like it a lot. 2. I was in a hurry when chosing my tracks, 3. I knew Maria would bring at least one A Perfect Circle track... I had planned to use it to counter it... but I had to use it in advance :-( Mini G.B.H. "City Baby Attacked By Rats" from Burning Ambitions: A History Of Punk Maria always surprice me when we play "varannan"! This time she went "Punk". Three Punk tracks out of six! Yep, she got me good :-) Maria then got a bonus track from the same record that I wanted to hear: Killing Joke "The Wait" or was it me who got it as a bonus ;-) Stormbringer Skinny Puppy "Blood On The Wall" from Bites I've been a big fan of Skinny Puppy since 1985 and I was so happy last year when I saw them live (finally!!!). Maria has always been hard to convince that they're great but she's beginning to "see the light". The live show at the Arvika Festival was only the first step. Her first words when I played this were "I want this too". Mini A Perfect Circle "The Hollow" from Mer De Noms She knows that I don't like Tool and even though I like A Perfect Circle better they're not among my favourites. Damn... I used my Slayer track too early! Stormbringer Public Energy "Three O' Three" from Hemi-Sync I need some acid. This was my choice this evening. Appearantly I had played at least once before (Maria recognized it very well already after some seconds) so it was a failiure. But it's a great track so I'm happy anyway. It would have been better though to pick a "new" great track than an "old" great track ;-) Mini Dernière Volonté ? from ? She got a CDr from a friend and we think that it's the best tracks from several CD's. We spent a long time in front of the computer trying to find a shop selling their stuff without any luck. I'll have to ask xdefenestratorx where to buy this because I want it too!!! We're going to prepare food now with Dead Kennedys in the speakers! Good evening fellow oggers! Stormbringer wrote:
Sorry Mika :-( We didn't invite you this time because we decided very late that we were going to have a "varannan" session this evening. Don't worry! We're soon going to do it again and then you'll be invited too!

Stormbringer/Mini/ Stryknin/ ukiro) had a marathon "varannan" from 16:50 to 03:10 at the "Bunker" (ukiro's place). That must be the longest varannan we've had so far. A lot of new (and old) interesting music was played and hopefully ukiro will post the tracklist and photos soon. Thank you for a nice evening! |
