I recently finished Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts, Farcry 2, Fable 2 and Gears of War 2. I've been going through Fallout 3 a second time to do the quests differently. Killing enemies in V.A.T.S. mode and watching them explode into a bloody mess never gets old. Now I'm playing Metal Gear Solid 4. The length of the cutscenes doesn't bother me at all actually. I still think Snake Eater is a little bit better, but it's pretty close so far. Raiden sure is handy with a sword. After that I'll give Resistance 2 and Dead Space a go.

Fable II. It's been fun so far. I haven't found it to be short at all, though I suppose it depends on how linear one plays it. I've been picking up odd jobs, getting married, having kids, buying properties and just generally having a good time tooling around the world, completing the main quest as I see fit. I'm not sure what short is exactly, but I've already wasted a good 20 hours on the game and don't think I'm anywhere near finished with it.

psymonkeyMy first impression is that I don't much care for it, but I'm sure in a few more hours it will get interesting. I take back everything I said ;-) Being only a couple hours into the game, I opted to start over. I wasn't happy with my choices for skill and special points, and had left the vault almost empty-handed with next to no ammo, nothing to sell, etc. This time I totally looted the vault, left loaded with goods to sell and a stockpile of ammo and haven't looked back. I now know better than to waste ammo on things I can just as easily bludgeon to death, am better aware of which skills I'll actually use in the game and generally more comfortable with my character building. Now, the game is great..just picked up the dog from the scrapyard and have finished numerous quests with relative ease. Sure wish I could carry more goods though!! :-D One thing I don't like, and the same holds true in so many games is having to make critical choices that will greatly effect your character development before having the opportunity to really understand how the game will play, and how you'll play it. Playing a couple of hours and starting over educated makes a huge difference in the wisdom with which traits are selected. psymonkey edited this message about 1 year ago. Iceferno wrote:

Want. Been really enjoying Dawn of War 2. Not really quite what I was expecting, but excellent nonetheless. It's very different to the first Dawn of War, or anything else really. Is it more RPG than RTS? I don't know, but it's damn good whatever it is. Co-op works brilliantly, not a single hitch (well, up until it crashed). It's a shame there's no campaign for the other races though, and the Space Marine missions are mostly kind of similar. It's also not the most stable of games at the moment, it's crashed a fair few times on me. Hopefully a future patch will fix that. Also Noby Noby Boy on the PS3. I have no idea what's going on. Seriously. There is a manual to read through, but it's roughly the length of the bible so I've not bothered yet. You can eat it though. I seriously recommend it for £3.19/€3.99/$4.99, although it's the kind of thing that's probably best appreciated when you're wasted. psymonkey wrote:

I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I've probably played a good 12 hours or so. One thing I can say for certain is that the cut scenes are excruciatingly long. One such scene, last night was so long that I thought the game had locked up in the middle of it. Turns out my controller had put itself to sleep due to inactivity. I'd say of the last 5 hours I've played, I've only really been involved for about 30 minutes. The rest? Story telling. They can be skipped and will if I play it twice, but they contain important information to your quests. So far, 6/10 lol wrote:

There is at least six hours worth of anime style cut scenes, which make me wish I was into or had any understanding as to the odd appeal of anime. Regardless, I think I'd give it a 7/10 anyway. i have always wanted second story on the ps1, bit pricey though. never played any of them. i am a big rpg fan, been playing Wild Arms recently. As good as i remember it, some of the best RPG music ever, loads of cool attacks and upgrades, fun level design (maze like enough to explore, but simple enough not to get lost once you know your way), a variety of tools to use in environments (e.g. grappling hook, bombs etc). Long Answer, well there's a funny story to that. Back when it came out, way back when I was dating a Japanese girl who was studying in the US. She and I ended up living together for a while, and she was always playing the second story, but it was all in Japanese. At the time, there was no English translation and being the kind of game it is, especially with the interface back then being largely text, it was pretty much impossible for me to play. We broke up eventually, kind of a rough break-up to be honest, we were both young and impatient. So one day I get this random package in the mail, no return address and it's the English version of the game, like a year later or something. I know it was from her, as there is absolutely no other reason for it to randomly show up at my door. I didn't know if it was a secret and she'd pre-ordered it for me when we were together or if she just wanted me to get to play it but that's how the story goes. We've actually been in touch recently, being more mature and capable of communicating again (as friends). It turns out after she left the US, she went back to Japan and ended up working on the previous Star Ocean...pretty cool :-) Oh, and she did send me the game post-break-up. What a sweetheart. I finished Star Ocean Last Hope last week. There is a running timer of play-time. 105 hours. And there is a HUGE amount to do after completing the game that is still engaging beyond the plot-line. Now, I did spend a ton of time inventing and creating items, doing side-quests, finding battles to level-up, etc but even still the amount of gaming packed into the package is massive! I hereby change my initial 7/10 to an 8.8/10 ;-) iuval wrote:
aw. :p I've always loved the R-Type series... every so often I play the original in an emulator to see how far I can get on one credit. I think the end of stage 5 is about my limit. It's good because while it's hard, it never feels unfair when you die. I also had Thunderforce IV on the Megadrive back in the day. Still remember the titles for that one. They are much less awesome than I remember tho :) Yesterday I went into the past (but not as far) to play Parappa the Rapper.. I forgot how hard it was :P ryzmaker11 wrote:

Heh, I've been hearing good things about this game for a long time. The only home version was for the Saturn, though, so I never played it. Though I don't think Treasure have actually made a bad game (and I've played some of their weirder ones.. Dynamite Headdy, Mischief Makers...) Anyway I finished Psychonauts.. I think Tim Schafer wanted to make an adventure game (hence the big inventory and fetch-quests), but he knew that an adventure game wouldn't sell so he made a platformer. The actual game is not amazing, but the writing, story and graphic design are just so good. So many great ideas, quite a few genuine LOL moments (pretty rare for a game I think). 'The Milkman Conspiracy' was probably my favourite level, but they're all good. Gets a bit frustrating at the end, but then I do actually like games to be hard to finish :) Anyway, now I'm playing Plants vs. Zombies. iuval wrote:

I'm really into FORZA MOTORSPORT on the Xbox 1 right now. It has the R53 MINI Cooper, Lotus Elise, Exige, Esprit, Aston Martin Vanquish, Porsche 944, Boxter, 911 GT3, 911 GT2 Race Car, and the boring japanese sports cars you see on the road all the time. The game was made before the R56 MINI Cooper which is a shame as I would have liked to play my own car. The game also doesn't have the Porsche Caymen S which is a pitty as well (no I don't own that car, I wish). If there are really good racing games on the new systems I don't know about them. I'd like to play a racing game that has authentic dash boards of the cars your playing instead of some standard lame mph and rev indicator thats the same for all the cars, that just sucks. Stuck_In_1992 wrote:
That does sound cool. Can you actually play the Metalica members or are they lame ass guitar hero stand ins? If they made a real Iron Maiden guitar hero edition with the actual band members I might have to buy a new game system to play it. Stuck_In_1992 wrote:
That game is dope! I still have that one and it still works :D Yes shooters both top down and side scrolling were the best games ever!!!! One of my favorites was actually neither, it was into the screen. Galaxy Force ][ by SEGA. There was a version that one could get on the Saturn but you needed a japanese converter to play it. Theres also a version on MAME but it runs too slow on my computer to be playable. Pitty SEGA never made a COMPREHENSIVE 80s compliation for the Xbox with Galaxy Force ][ included. That game was so good and it was much more graphicaly intensive then Afterburner or Outrun. Speaking of Outrun..... OUTRUNNERS!!!! Kick ass cartoon racing game! The graphics were sick as was the lo-fi sound which was just so beautiful. A real good version was never released for the home. There was a shitty Genesis (Megadrive) version but it was half screen and the graphics were lousy. Goad wrote:

The other day I downloaded Modular Combat - it's more of a multiplayer mod, but you can play it by yourself. The real goods are in the the player vs monster mode, where monsters spawn randomly around the map, and you have to hold out against them. It's kind of RPG like, in that you kill monsters and gain experience points and go up levels, but it's all first person with all the standard HL2 weaponary, plus some extras. Every time you go up a level you get points to spend on things like minions (automatic sentry guns, friendly zombies and antlions etc.), gain more armour, health regeration etc. and special abilities like teleport and a jetpack. There's tons of stuff to choose from, and I'm sure future updates will deliver more, although it could do with some more maps. As I said you can play by yourself, but if you like it I highly recommend jumping on a server to play with other people. Friendly fire is off, so you don't have to worry about getting killed by your team mates.

front mission 3.. oh man. there's a game that i could list 100s of things i hate about, but somehow it kept reeling me back in!

Team Fortress 2 yet again. I'm almost half decent these days, at least as soldier. I wish I wasn't such a terrible spy though, as I now have a swanky new hat for him. Not that anyone would see it, as I spend most of the time invisible anyway...

Batman Arkham Asylum - maybe best game this year. I am an batman virgin, but I still enjoy the story, characters and world very much. (saw the Dark Night movie tonight also, which I found deep shit in comparsion to the game).

Gameplay is also very good - a little fighting, little searching for riddles, which is quite entertaining, some stealth action and jumping, crawling... Enjoyable even on PC, which is not on the edge. Only bevare of the cracked/stolen versions - joker brought some surprises for punishing us pirates. Ruined save game just before last fight is one them. (screw you autosave!) psymonkey wrote:
Just got that in the mail myself. It's gotten rave reviews from just about everyone, including people with little to no interest in Batman. Apparently, as you said just a great game for just about everyone!

Red Faction Guerrilla again, a game which is basically GTA on Mars, but without the building up relationships and other crap that gets in the way of causing massive explosions. I'm playing on normal difficulty because there's a multitude of situations where you will die in a matter of seconds with nothing you can do but sob, but I will definitely give it another go on hard once I'm finished. I'm on what I assume is the last mission, and it's a right bastard - definitely a challenging last fight, I won't give too much away but I will say that it consists of 90% large explosions for 90% of the time. Can't really hope for anything more in such a game. It is definitely a great game, but there are a number of things that get right on my tits - like when trying to get into my lovely big tank which gives you a fighting chance against the otherwise insurmountable odds, but the protagonist insists on just falling over again and again. There's only so much of that I can take before I Alt+F4 the fucker. Will give it another go tomorrow when he'll hopefully behave himself. And when it's not 4:20am. Crikey.

Been looting the trousers off of Borderlands. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes going around shooting things with their mates, picking up a crapload of guns along the way. Single player is not even half as fun, but still quite playable. It's really built for co-op though, and that's where it shines. Favourite gun so far is this one, although it's not remotely rare.
