Psyknights debut with a unique style of beautiful melodies, deep kicks and flawless mixing. Some sounds create a feeling like this is a sequel to Infected Mushroom's - Converting Vegetarians Disc 2 (The other side) yet more upbeat. There are elements of Psydub and a lot of good old Goa Chill. 5 members have this / 13 members want this Rating: 5.0/5 (6 votes) Seems there is reason. Josephschembri wrote:

My question is - why are the covers hole punched? I could understand if it was for a filing system, but the holes are on the wrong side. Or was the inlay the wrong way round when it was punched for a filing system? Ooze edited this message over 2 years ago. Josephschembri wrote:

canyon-Kalle, Sep 29, 2007 Whow, whatta great techno album we have here. What a blasphemy to label this as goa trance. Sure there are hints of psychedelia on some tunes, but most of the tracks have a simple but addictive techno beat over some underlying analog sweeps. I would describe the melodies as gentle and dreamy, not too dramatic. If you're a fan of good early techno I strongly suggest getting this album. If you're looking for goa trance - better try Gilbert's Asia 2001 albums instead. So: is it Goa or is it Techno ? ukiro wrote:
I find that I disagree with a lot of Kalle's reviews and to me it's proto-goa for sure. It's more melodic than "techno beat over some underlying analog sweeps" would have you think, but it's of course fairly laid back and dreamy - it's 1993-1994 material after all and indeed later Asia 2001 albums have more of the elements we today define as goa trance. But, I reiterate, this is proto-goa trance for me.

The sound is raw and primitive, but in a very passionate way. This album actually never ever leaves my MP3 player, because it's so filled with compassion for these analogue synth sounds and dreamy, melancholic trance moods that I just can't get enough of. Also, this album is impressively coherent for what is essentially a "best of" collection from his releases on Doss House and the more mellow stuff on early Trans'Pact. It's not for people seeking orgasmic peak-hour walls of howling sound or fat basslines, but rather for us who appreciate old analogue sounds, dreamy, trancey moods and music that sets the mind adrift. ukiro summed it up, actually. For me also, it's on the borderline of trance to Goa. But we must remember that it's still 1994 (and even some of the stuff there is from 1993) and at that time many records were not easily categorized: techno / trance / early Goa elements were fused in an utterly creative way. Josephschembri wrote:
Koxbox - Live At Burning Man 1996 canyon-Kalle, Aug 12, 2007 This isn't worth your while in my opinion. The tracks sound more simple and club-friendly than the usual "buckets full of psychedelia" koxbox of the time. None of the tracks really stand out superior to the original track. I think it was a good move not to release this album. If you never get to hear this - you're not really missing out on anything special. Unless you're one of those smelly goa-hippie collectors. :-) What about that ? la-voie-du-sabre wrote:

Joseph, that one is just incomprehensible to me, and a fine example of why you should probably disregard all Kalle's reviews even though he does get the occasional detail right.

"More simple" is flat-out wrong - there is certainly not a lower level of detail in the Burning Man versions. And "club-friendly"? I have no idea what he means by this, because the tracks are not shifted down in BPM, housier, or anything like that. The only koxbox stuff that's more ripe with psychedelia is the Psychopod material. This particular version of Point Of No Return is a good example of why I disagree with him - I find the arrangement to be much improved from the original, and an amazing track has been made way better. I don't see why I'd ever play the original instead of this mix in a DJ set, for example. The release was not pulled due to it's content but because of a copyright debacle with Harthouse, so there goes that theory as well. And "smelly goa-hippie collectors"? I'd wager that statement is made up of about 99% jealousy. So to sum it up - he gets the actual facts wrong (i.e. the amount of detail is actually quantifiable/measurable), and I strongly disagree with the parts that are matters of opinion. Josephschembri wrote:

I started with Let's Turn On, then I put on disc 3 of Goa 2001 - The Best Of Psychedelic Trance. Sadly the latter will be passed by most as crap but Matt Hillier is one of the most underestimated and untalked about artists in the scene. Track 3.3 (read: 303!) is totally insane and one of the most Hypnotic & Acidic tunes I ever heard - try downloading it. Beware: production is bad sadly! inexpressible wrote:

Listening to that Koxbox live @ 96, after listening to the original studio recordings, left me the feeling I've described there. To me it clearly sounded like it was played for an audience, hence "club friendly". It's not a bad thing by any means. I already gave my cdr for someone as I just didn't like it too much. I can't re-check my initial feeling of it being more straight forward but at the time I felt so. the smelly goa hippie punch - it was a clear joke, but might be comprehended in a different way than I meant it. you can ask to remove my comment if it feels irritating. I'm not sure what Ukiro meant with the jealousy part. Jealous of who? The owners of original Koxbox live vinyl? I don't even own a vinyl player... Perhaps he's view on music is so drastically different to mine that he starts drawing such negative conclusions. Oh, about Loren X. Excellent cd! I've listened to a lot of techno and trance, I feel Loren X is close to french techno sound of the time. That's just me and you can again ask to remove the comment if it gives you headache! ujw34 wrote:
