Worth a look perhaps is massive second hand store, Beanos - Middle Street,
Croydon, CR0 1RE (020) 8680 1202 - It's on 3 floors, they claim to have 2 million records, and probably do. Electronic stuff is on the second floor.
By train from London: From London Victoria Mainline Station (platforms 16-19), take the fast train to East Croydon (15 minutes). Turn RIGHT out of East Croydon Station and follow the tram tracks straight ahead until you reach the main shopping area. With Barclays Bank on your right, head down the hill (Crown Hill), Middle Street is the FIRST turning on the left (before Surrey Street Market).

Note: East Croydon Station is only a short journey from London Gatwick Airport on the main London line.

Those details + a map are on this page.
Croydon is Zone 6.

There were another couple of second hands stores very near there (Frith Road, Drummond Road) but wherther they are still around I'm not sure.

Swagrecords 42 Station Road, Croydon, Surrey. CR0 2RB (020) 8681 7735 is in that area too, just at the side of West Croydon station. Mostly new stock, lists here
-

Rat Records - 348 Camberwell New Road, SE5 0RW (020) 7274 3222 - Next to Camberwell Green. Varied diverse second hand stock. Bargains in the basement. 10 minutes from Loughborough Junction overground station, or a similar length journey on a bus from Elephant and Castle underground (68, 468 buses + others). Maybe 15 minutes from Oval tube. Camberwell is Zone 2.

All Tone records 95 Granville Arcade SW9
Reggae/dub records with cafe
020 7733 6888

020 7274 4476

Supertone Records 110 Acre Lane, SW2

020 7737 7761

Brixton is Zone 2
-

A long standing quality shop, emphasis on independent music of all kinds, is Rough Trade - two locations - 130 Talbot Road, London W11 1JA (020) 7229 8541 (Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill Gate tube, Zone 2) and 16 Neal's Yard, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9DP (020) 7240 0105 (In the basement of Slam City Skates. Covent Garden, Leicester Square or Tottenham Court Road tube, Zone 1).
I prefer the Ladbroke Grove shop, it's less hectic by far and in my experience the staff there are thoroughly decent. Plus it has windows, which is nice.
-

Lastly but not leastly, and strangely yet unmentioned is
Smallfish, probably the best outlet of new electronic vinyl left, as far as i know. Organic food in the basement, twats left right and centre. 329, Old Street, London EC1V 9LE (020) 7739 2252 (Old Street, Liverpool Street, or Shoreditch tube). Zone 1

This shop has been running for fifty years, dealing in secondhand music from rock to reggae to ragtime! With an excellent vinyl section (which I notice is growing, hooray), hardly any dance though, I regularly see original Beatles, Stones LPs, also interesting folk, reggae and blues LPs are always turning up in there. Some very nice and rare records. They also sell CDs, videos & DVDs, all secondhand and all at good prices, I bought a chart CD in there for a fiver in perfect condition! The staff are friendly and really knowledgeable too, I hope it goes on for another 50 years! :-)

EVERYWHERE the record shops are closing!! I would double check every shop listed on here before you go there, because even in the last month quite a few have shut down across London!
People get on your bikes and go and buy from your local friendly independent record shop before we lose them all and then have to pay crazy prices online for stuff which was a fraction of the the cost in the shops!
You can't beat going into a shop and spending hours looking through all the stuff, it's a lot more fun than clicking a mouse!
So do it now before it's too late! You'll miss them when they are all gone, the death knell is sounding!!!!

Reckless in Camden closed well over a year ago (Angel went some time before that). What three closed in Berwick Street? If you count Reckless as two shops, OK, but if you mean Selectadisc, then that's now Sister Ray and the old Sister Ray is still a record shop (can't remember what it's called).

I was in there today, picked up a nice few bits I'd been after for a while. They've a good-ish selection of techno/electronica, a good Basic Channel/R&S section. They've an electro section which I looked through, and didn't see anything I recognised, so I'll assume it's electro-house. It is in Brick Lane after all. There's loads of Jazz/Funk/Soul in various formats (including a pretty large 7" section), lots of rock/punk/noise, clothes, books, a cafe selling decent espresso, free internet access. It's without doubt the largest indie record shop I've ever been into (no problem getting the pram in and out, disabled access too), although I was a bit disappointed with the amount of music available. A shop that size crammed with vinyl would be heaven on Earth. I didn't have time to explore fully though, as the missus was getting impatient in the cafe section. It was definitely worth the trip, and I'll be going back soon, no doubt.

Oh yeah and there was another shop I passed on the way, Hanbury Street maybe? Can't remember the name, and I didn't go in (pram wasn't going to fit through the door, let alone up the tiny aisles), but I had a good peek through the window. It looked to be second hand, the sections I saw were World, Greensleeves, Jazz, and I saw a couple of Funkadelic records in the window which seemed cheap. I'll have to go back without the pram to have a proper look, but it looked promising, if you had a few hours to kill digging.

Someone's opened a shop in one of the former Berwick street Reckless places. I need to bring a pen and paper with me next time I go down there and take notes!

It's called Cautious Records if I recall correctly.

They from the indie / rock reckless? I think the asian guy that use to be in reckless is now at the exchange. It's ok in there some bits overpriced, while others quite cheap.
Don't think much of the rough trade website though, they have things listed that aren't in stock, which is quite irritating, would like out the shop though. Just so busy down them parts, puts me off.

Im adding another reccommendation for Rough Trade Records.

I only went to the one on Portobello road, but they had some great stuff. Lots of new vinyl, but some old gems as well.

up the street from them was Intoxica I believe, and that place was really great. I found a bunch of Residents and France Gall there.

I popped into Revival Records (previously Reckless) on Saturday, and found it to be run on a lower scale than before.

This I mean in terms of number of records sold (less than before), but also the variety. They really didn't have much in the way of rare items, as they used to have in the past.

Saying that, the prices are lower now than when it was Reckless, and staff reasonably friendly...didn't recognise any of the old staff there.

Whilst I was there, which was probably for an hour or so mid-afternoon on Saturday, there were hardly any people in the store....total contrast to before, when the place would be mobbed ...

I'd be curious to know where the good spots are nowadays, too.

Reckless records has been closed for over a year, i havent checked out the new shop revival that opened up in soho but i will do. As for sisterray, they dont really have a good selection in my opinion, its a bit too clean for a record store.
The best trade shops are in notting hill, theres the soul music exchange and the other one that sells videos right next to each other and they have a great selection. To get to them just take the central line eastbound to notting hill gate and theyre prette visible when you get out the tube station.

A lot of shops... I can't visit them all in one day. Please help me out here.

1) The shop can't be to far from central London. I wanna take the tube, but I'm not going to take the train.
2) The shop sells electronic music on vinyl.
3) It's a damn good shop.
4) Please don't mention the shops in Soho or Camden... been there, done that.

Can someone help me out, please?

Thanx!

There's a pretty decent little shop about 5 minutes walk North from the Rough Trade East "alternative megastore".

I came out of it with loads of stuff last time I was in... Nothing too "underground" but decent selections of second hand vinyl, mostly at "sensible" prices. Clearance Racks as well. Plenty to dig through for an hour or so !!

Strongest on Rock, Funk/Soul. Sections for Electronic/Dance music and other stuff of course, but I wouldn't say it was a strength.

Shop's called Beats Workin' (93-95 Sclater St, London E1 6HR - Tel. 0207 729 8249. Link.

i wouldnt bother with the one in birmingham if i were you- its stock moves really slow and the selection just seems to be rock 12" that used to be in HMV. i did find the 1st press of DJ Shadow's endtroducing there once (the gatefold sleeve one thats now getting £20-£30 on ebay) for £13 but i left it- looking back i should have definately got it.

Excuse the spammy post, but seriously, check out the store I posted, several posts above if you're in London. One very large section of the shop is stocked with disco, funk, soul, boogie etc aswell as lots of jazz, reggae & dub, pop, synth-pop, rock, punk, indie, metal, hip-hop etc

And a big secondhand section of house, techno, oldschool, electronic etc

Closed on mondays only. Tell the owner that the store was recommended by John (teknonutter) & you never know, might get a bigger discount.

iv found them good for classic house, old skool & jungle/dnb however compared to the London stores their no where near as good. i did get a copy of Shut Up & Dance - Death Is Not The End - 1992 Shut Up And Dance Records/SUADLP 05 in unplayed condition for £10 from their Birmingham store :o)

There's plenty of cheap house & trance, both in the normal piles/crates & in the bargain boxes of the shop I mention above. Half price sales on everything for 4 days from the 8th of Jan. Lots more oldskool, hardcore, techno etc in its own sections, it's worth a check, believe me :)

Check that store I mentioned for reggae, as half of their stock is reggae, roots, dub, lover's rock, rocksteady, ska etc 12", 7" etc give them a call before you get there to see what's in. But also check the exchanges in Notting Hill, Camden, Soho. Check out Crazybeat aswell, they sell reggae too.

I've got a feeling that a new record shop has opened on Church Street, Stoke Newington. There used to be a book shop close to Nando's, which had records in the back. The book shop shut down and I've got a feeling that the guy that did the records has taken over the space. The records were always reasonably priced and I've had some totally classic finds in the backroom before, including 3 unplayed copies of the aril brikha clear vinyl (100 copies only), just before the book shop shut down. I'll let you know more information later this week, as I'll take a detour that way home one evening.

Good luck !!!!!!!!!

hi, can you be more specific?

new techno - perhaps phonica, followed by a quick look in sister-ray. then on to the second hand stores in berwick street.

second hand / collectors techno - the record and tapes exchanges (depending on where you are in london) and alan's i suppose.

any advances on that, anyone anyone?

i know it's unusual to reveal digging spots but i went to nudge records in brick lane today and was pleasantly surprised.

http://www.welovelocal.com/en/...ops/nudge-e16qr.html

there was a good range of stuff across the board including some good house and garage bits at 2.99, some nice drum and bass (with some rare looking 10" dubs with the name swift stamped on them) and three large rows of reggae 12"s. unfortunately i didn't have time to have a proper dig through but if anyone has a chance to visit please leave some feedback.
