Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a great place to visit, record shopping isn't one of its highlights though but the odd thing pops up; italo-disco must have been massive here in the 80s.

Hong Kong Island
Central:

Collectibles
Address: 2/F, 11 Queen Victoria Street, Central
Tel: 2559 9562
Opening Hours: Monday - Sunday; 12pm - 8pm
Directions: Queen Victoria Street is a street next to the wet market where the escalator begins near Des Voeux Road.
Description: The best record shop I've visited in Hong Kong, they used to have two floors but recently cut it to one. It's a bit dusty, you walk out with filthy hands but I've had some good finds here. It's a second-hand book shop too.

Pro Sound
Address: 5/F, 3 Queen Victoria Street, Central
Tel: 2122 9369
Description: Mostly classical, new CDs and some vinyl with a small second-hand section.

Choice Hi Fi
Address: 6/F, Yu To Sang Building, 37 Queen's Road Central
Tel: 2526 3382
Directions: Find 37 Queen's Road, go down the alley next to it for a bit and go into what looks like an office building; take the lift to the sixth floor.
Description: Quite a lot of unorganized second-hand vinyl here as well as new classical releases. Example finds: Places And Spaces - HK$40, It Should Have Been You - HK$40, The Man Machine - HK$120.

Classics
Address: Room 201, Won Hing Building, 74-78 Stanley Street, Central
Tel: 2541 7733
Opening Hours: Monday - Saturday; 11am - 7:30pm
Directions: Tricky to find, from Queen's Road walk up the road the escalator takes and take your first right down the dead-end street full of outside restaurants. There's a door on the left half way down in a white building, go through here and to the second floor.
Description: Quite often not open, has signs on the door at lunchtime - out to lunch, hmm, that's when you get customers ... the guy seems to be more into it as a hobby than a business. You will find mainly classical, jazz and rock but there are always a selection of 12"s and these will be bargains if you're lucky enough to pick up a gem, I have once or twice.

Walls of Sound
Address: 3/F, 38 Cochrane Street, Central
Tel: 2805 1584
Opening Hours: Tuesday - Sunday; 12:30pm - 7:30pm
Directions: Next to the escalator, opposite Starbucks.
Description: Mainly Jazz, Rock and Classical but there's a small selection of dance music 12"s. Fair selection of second-hand CDs and DVDs too. You might find something here, I have a few times. Logic and Venus for instance.

Percival Records Co
Address: Harvest Bldg, Wing Kut Street
Tel: 2541 0855
Description: Leaning towards audiophile releases, mainly CD, some vinyl - all new.

Sam The Record Man
Directions: Shop 3098, IFC Mall, Central. You can't miss it, it's in the shopping centre adjoined to the tallest building in Hong Kong.
Description: Describe themselves as Japanese hi-end first edition specialists. Which sounds great but the prices are astronomical and I wonder if they ever sell any records ever. The Man Machine was HK$4,000. To put that number in context you can fly from Hong Kong to Tokyo and back with Dragonair for HK$1,700.

Admiralty
HK Records Ltd
Address: Pacific Place
Tel: 2845 7088
Description: Mainstream CD/DVD shop in Pacific Place.

Sheung Wan
Cat Street (Upper Lascar Row):
A bric-a-brac stalls street mixed in with antique shops. One or two of the shops also have a selection of second-hand records. An interesting area for any visitor.

Causeway Bay
Whitenoise Records
Address: 1/F, Canal Road East, Causeway Bay
URL: http://whitenoiserecords.org
Tel: 2591 0499
Description: Interesting little shop, all new CDs and vinyl but hand-selected by the owner.

Wan Chai
Saiko Sounds
Address: 14th Floor, Kai Kwong Building, 332-334 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai
Tel: +852 2573 9161
Fax: +852 2573 3404
URL: www.saikosounds.com
Description: Goa Trance, Psy-Trance, Techno, Ambient, Dub

Time Traveler
Address: Shop B07, Emperor Group Centre, 288 Henessy Road, Wan Chai
Tel: 2574 3773
Opening Hours: Monday - Sunday; 2:30pm - 8:30pm
Description: Quite a lot of stock but not terribly exciting.

Music Shop
Address: Shop 202, Oriental 188 Shopping Centre, 188 Wan Chai Road, Wanchai
Description: A few pieces of vinyl to be found here and the shopping centre itself is quite interesting in a nerdy sort of way.

Kowloon
Kowloon City:
Records Rendezvous
Address: Kowloon City Plaza, Kowloon City
Directions: Quite difficult to get to, I drive here, there's no MTR so probably the best thing would be to get to Prince Edward MTR and then get a taxi. It's in a sparkling shopping centre on probably the fifth or sixth floor. Description: Refreshingly good selection of 7"s, a couple of blocks of 12"s and lots of albums. I have found some quite obscure items in here.

They also have a branch in Tsim Sha Tsui in the basement of Star House Plaza but the vinyl section is much smaller.

Mong Kok:
The Beat Record
Address: Ground Floor & The Cockloft, 53 Tung Choi St, Mong Kok
Description: Thanks to cowcud for spotting this shop, some great condition obscure bargains found here.

Zoo Records
Address: B31, Sino Centre, 582-592 Nathan Road, MongKok
Tel: 3188 2303
URLs: Official site, Facebook group
Description: Sino Centre is a cheap shopping centre on Nathan Road. Down the escalator you'll find maybe 20 little units, mainly CDs and Canto-Pop, one shop highlighted here. There have been second-hand vinyl shops here in the past and they may spring up again - Stand On The Word was found here for HK$10.

Sham Shiu Po:
Take the MTR to here, get out at exit A2 or C2, walk up and down the market stalls and shops, there's lots of electrical equipment, often at good prices and you can also get DJ equipment here too. Two or three of the shops also have a selection of second-hand records.

HMV
Don't sneer at the HMVs in town. Apart from the regular mainstream genres all of them also have separate "dance" sections where you can always find something of interest. Typical prices; chart toppers go at HKD 100-110, regular CDs at HKD 140-160 and the expensive European imports are around HKD 200-300. Over the years I have picked up quite a number of electronic pearls although with each passing year the selection seems to be tighter and more commercial.

HMV Central
Located inside the Landmark mall on top of MTR station Central. from exit G, climb the two stairs and move straight through the building and make a U-turn when you come up on the exit on the opposite side. All HMV branches tend to have more or less the same stock, but currently the Central branch is the one with the biggest inventory. For those interested, this shop also has a very wide range of DVDs available.

HMV Tsim Sha Tsui
Over on the Kowloon side. Take the MTR to -you guessed it- Tsim Sha Tsui and take exit A1 to Beijing Road. Go south just round the corner and enter Beijing Rd, from then on you'll find it on your right hand side at Hankow Road, the second road on the right. Used to be the best of the HMV lot although Central has now surpassed it.

HMV Causeway Bay
You know the drill by now, exit the MTR at Causeway Bay, exit E Windsor House. Immediately turn left on the busy street and follow it eastwards towards Victoria Park. HMV is in a big mall on the left (next to IKEA) and should be easy to locate. This is the weakest of the three although the three did tend to complement each other fairly well. Often titles would only be available in one of the three shops, so it pays to look around.

There are also branches at Queensway Plaza (MTR: Admiralty), at Telford Plaza (MTR: Kowloon Bay) and Elements (Kowloon Station).

In the main index, I've listed Hong Kong under China.

I don't know enough about recent politics to know if this is a bad idea. They're semi-autonomous, but still rely on the national Chinese govt for certain services.?.. Is there is a common understanding to regard them as a separate nation or not?

Hong Kong is a 'Special Administrative Region' of China, the way you have it is fine.

'One Country, Two Systems' is the Chinese Government's slogan for the post-1997 agreement that says Hong Kong will remain the same for 50 years - the Governor is now appointed by Beijing instead of London.

BTW According to the record bag, that Beat Records (節拍唱片) place is on the Ground Floor & The Cockloft (whatever that means), No. 53 Tung Choi St. I think the address recorded above should mention this :)
