do you plan to release an iPhone application ? it could be great to contact buyers or sellers instantly ! And also to submit release, edit releases or add pictures :) Just on the go ! or maybe a mobile version of discogs? regards, kunf kunf edited this message over 3 years ago. simfonik (Discogs staff) wrote:

I use Discogs from my iPhone all the time and it works great. I check on releases when digging in crates, respond to buyers on orders, answer your post, etc... just as I would from my computer.

We have no immediate plans on developing anything specifically for the iPhone, or other mobile devices, at this time though. kunf wrote:

i use discogs a lot on my iphone too but let's be honest this is not very practical, you always have to zoom in or out and the search box tries to do its best but i mean a real discogs application with quick search for releases and contact sellers could be awesome but i can definitely understand this is not a priority for the moment for discogs ;-) peaking wrote:

Id love an iphone app and would be willing to pay for it...something a bit more stable than mobile safari which is great most times but can also get quite slow if you dont reboot your phone

I don't think so. IMHO there are other priority issues to be resolved. mayday wrote:

I'm writing an iPhone app for viewing release details from Discogs. The first version is fairly simple, with basic search and viewing functionality. The purpose for the existence of the app is that I could quickly view info on records from a fleamarket/used record store (they rarely have turntables there!) with just GPRS/EDGE. :) 1.0 is pretty close to being finished, I just need to test it some more. Which brings me to this forum: if you'd be interested in beta testing this app, drop me a line and we'll talk... :) peaking wrote:

Beta is awesome!!! Now if we could only have market place info included it would make this an essential iphone app...maybe not to be able to add items initially but at least to be able to view at a glance how sought after an item is and what the value would be...i realize that info is not in the API but would be awesome!

Yeah, I'd like that too but I'm quite wary of doing something that would require scraping or some other fishy business. :) There are some more features planned (not for 1.0 but for 1.1 etc) but they'll either be 100% Discogs API compliant or unique to my app.

That would be a reason for me to buy some mobile Ithing that can do that. Would use it to check a few in a crate to see if I want the whole crate. Have had some luck with that sort of buying before. If you have a mailing list for announcing when it's out there please pm me and I'll send you my email to add to it. jimthing wrote:

^ website down :-( ^ Just found this... Is it worth the £1.19/$1.99 iPhone App Store price yet though, due to the limited functionality? Many free or £0.59/$1.00 app's have much better, fully functioning, and better use of available API's for that kind of money... personally, I'd wait til much better stuff comes before forking out cash just yet. Also, why call the app the general term of just "Records" which could mean anything (bank records, medical records, etc) — are you not allowed to use something using the word (and icon of) "Discogs" then...? superjohan wrote:

In a way you're right. Records' functionality is limited (on purpose) for now, although more features (such as artist and label pages) are coming soon. I'm actually just laying the finishing touches on the searching now. As for the price, well, I think $1.99 is fair. Developing software isn't free, and that's not a lot of money. jimthingAlso, why call the app the general term of just "Records" which could mean anything (bank records, medical records, etc) — are you not allowed to use something using the word (and icon of) "Discogs" then...? This one's simple: I like the name. :) I didn't want something Discogs specific, as the features may change, and most importantly, we're not affiliated with Discogs in any way. We just love the site and the API. :) treysmith wrote:

Personally I don't think iPhone application for Discogs is needed but perhaps an optimized mobile version of the Discogs website would be a good idea. That would then support more than one mobile device and would ease and speed up the usage of the Discogs site. Just my 2 cents. senator-recordings wrote:

Suggestions: 1. Have the quality status displayed (needs votes/correct etc..). 2. Make it possible to view multiple images for a release. 3. Show (linked) credits. 4. Show Master Releases in artist listings. superjohan wrote:

1. That's not available in the Discogs API so I don't think that'll be shown any time soon. 2 and 3. These were planned for this version but I just had to release this now :) (too much work and no play etc) Maybe one day. 4. This would be neat but would require quite a bit of trickery (the API doesn't make it obvious, IIRC, correct me if I'm wrong) johan simfonik (Discogs staff) wrote:

Discs is another approach for accessing Discogs through you iPhone / iPod touch. You can save entries on the device as bookmarks and access them offline. So the bookmarks even works for your iPod Touch when no WiFi network is avaiable. Here's a demo on YouTube.

re. an in-house Discogs app

From a business perspective, by having an app, it gives you a "presence" as a company/organisation on the device. ie. It's a good marketing tool for advertising Discogs as THE research tool for music information. This in turn drives traffic to the site, and hopefully makes more eyeballs/sales/turnover/profits. Especially as increasingly people use their mobiles more and more on the road for this info, rather than necessarily using stand-alone computers to do so, and this is surely going to increase with technological advances. (iPad v2 onwards ;-) Rightly or not, that's the real reason many brands bother to invest in these apps, rather than the app necessarily being a better access point than the browser to their customers. (Although it's lucky that it is often a positive consequence of making one for users :-) Many brands have gone about this by making their app free with the essentials on, then doing in-app purchase option for an advanced option version (Discogs advanced stuff would include collection, wantlist, sales functions) that help cover the app production costs, and may even provide a small income. Failing that, they simply issue one free as a loss leader for their major operation. __________________ For iPhone Discogs users, you can in the meantime add a link button to your homescreen to open a separate browser window for access. But it's not quite the same thing as a dedicated app GUI. jimthing wrote:

Oh how I yearn for the day when I an click on the app when standing over a dusty bin of records, be able to search and view it's info (already possible), get an idea of it's worth from some that are for sale through the site, add to the discussions, and use the camera function to add a pic if one is missing, or start a draft. Oh well...

In the sellers' "Update Order:" section, after typing a message into the textarea, the textarea will expand to cover the "Update" button, and there's no way in iphone safari to get it to contract back to its normal size so you can click the update button, except to reload the page. The only way I've been able to work around this is to type my message, copy it, reload the page and paste it in. Sometimes that doesn't work, though, as clicking the update button will cause the textarea to attain focus & expand. easy partial solution: move the update button from the bottom of the textarea to the top. less easy solution: disable the click/drag/expand function for textareas displayed on an iphone / implement an iphone-friendly interface effzehn wrote:
