Create Lists

We've just turned on a new function that will let you create your own lists of releases, artists, and labels. These can be used for anything really, examples: "Top 10 albums of 2008" or "Labels I Collect".

To create a list just go to a release, artist, or label page and click "Add to List" in the Tools section. You'll have to option to create a new list or add it to an existing list. Comments on the item and List description are optional. But you're required to have a List title. When you're done with your list you can switch it from private to public. Public lists will also get mentioned on the related pages as well as your user profile.

Edit: OK, a couple more;

1. Make it possible to choose if new items to the list should appear at the top or at the botttom of the list
2. Make it possible to compile list of users (´Krautrock Collectors at Discogs´type of lists).

It's great for creating Charts, playlists, sets etc...

One thing noticed already:
Will probably use this feature to indicate pitch amounts for tracks (+/- 8). However, character "+" is left out when added to comments field.

Trying to find time and get real use of this very pleasant addition. Thanks!

My current long and pain staking system of finding in collection, moving to folder within collection, and filing to according reference number takes ages. To make these lists and export the data would be great!

They are just another way to contribute to discogs. To combine similar records together. Haven't you used any other music sites like rate your music? They've had lists for ages!

For example (List of sexy album art):
http://rateyourmusic.com/lists...&show=100&start=1500

I think of making some myself too. Like best "Swedish modern soul songs" list and "top latin america bboy breaks". Most classic Finnish Christmas songs could be one too.

If I was a DJ I could make myself some playlists what to play on gigs and select records from my collection.

Now only thing I'm missing is the feature to add public comments/Discussion to releases like on RateYourMusic and Youtube videos (and don't mean reviews)! Then discogs would be perfect!

Note that bands I have added to the Krautrock-list gets a link to the list at the bottom of the artist page. When more users start to add lists, this could be a way to explore bands/genres etc.

a proposal: wouldn't it be nice to have a link on the artist, label & release pages to show all public lists in which the particular label/artist/release is in?

This way things get linked in a 'freestyle'-way, depending on the users creating the lists. Might be nice for just passing some time surfing through discogs looking for things related to what you like.

It'll even feed curiosity (of people like me) for certain records, which can have a positive effect on the marketplace as side-effect.

However, the list display takes up way too much space for my purpose. I wonder how one would sort a paged list with drag+drop ... let's have automatic sort options (by artist / title / year etc.) first :)

Hell of a job:
http://www.discogs.com/lists/Classical-Composers/396

But... the best result is yielded manual..., automatic sorting quickly would have some annoying issues. (Sorting automaticly on artist 'real' names should be done on the family-name,
Sorting on date of birth (in my example) gives problems when dates are not exactly known, ...)

A 'position' field for every 'list-entry' would be nice though.
Example:
1 entry_A
2 entry_B
3 entry_C
4 entry_D
5 entry_E
....
1324 entry_Z

now list item# 1324 should be between list item# 3&4:
-> edit position of item# 1324 -> type 4 in the position field -> Apply-button

list item# 1324 goes to position 4; 4 shifts to 5, 5 to 6, 6 to 7,...

For the first 50 items it's allright, but when the list becomes larger, things start to go VERY slowly using drag&drop...

Automatic sorting is dangerous I think, it could immediatly destroy custom sorting as things are saved automaticly too. Except if the sorting option is only for 'display' and doesn't influence the actual list's manual sorting:
I would display it as following in that case:
1 entry_B
2 entry_A
3 entry_C
4 entry_G
5 entry_E
...
becomes sorted:
2 entry_A
1 entry_B
3 entry_C
5 entry_E
4 entry_G
(the manual position# remains the same as it is sorted manually)

Yes, I was mainly thinking of the display. I want a view of my list that looks exactly like "My Collection", minus the "Folder" column, plus a "Comments" column. Sortable by any of the fields, plus a "custom sort" mode that restores the manual sort order.

I have been talking about making an option for "browsable collection folders" for ages. Lists are the closest to it now.

For me the main use of lists is to collect things that are not in my collection, like "CDs I gave to my friends as birthday presents" (so that I don't give the same person the same CD twice :), or "Albums I have on tape". But that would certainly be nice, too.

Sounds like you've got experience being put on hate-lists:)

In fact I don't even think it would harm, just don't read them... (waste of time anyway, except for the "they like trance, laugh at them", seems to be a nice idea to me) (just joking)

But not reading is better than reporting, reporting makes me think too much about things that happened between 1930 and 1945 in Nazi-Germany (In fact, in real (non-computer)-life, I make it a habit to intimidate reporters, and report to everybody they report stuff, so they get a total social rejection and at the end they dissappear due to lack of social life and misleading wrong information that is told to them, so their reports start to be plain nonsense. That's what reporters earn!

We need protection from this kind of people some way... (Vuil bazepoepers!) (in English literally: Dirty Boss-dick-lickers)

what about visit-statistics to see how often a list is used by anyone else than the creator?

And the option to give comments on a list?
posted 6 months ago. ( permalink | report )
A list can be public, or private, but why can't a list be made totally public accessible?

example: http://www.discogs.com/lists/P...phonys-1964-1968/940
This is a list of a series which contains an intregral recording of Beethoven's symphonies.
Because these are released separate and have different content, they cannot be in a MR. So I linked them together through this list.

But because only I can edit this list, nobody can add one in case a new that belongs to this list is submitted. So I should start keeping myself busy with checking this from time to time. (That's ok for 1 release, but there are more similar non-MR cases where a list can come handy to group them)

That's why I would want to make it Public Domain so anyone can edit it.

Maybe this can be done in the form of a possible incorrect vote (but no correct vote needed) such as the MR, to reverse faulty or damaging edits. (Possibly only by the creator, although this seems dangerous towards) dissappearing members
