Guidelines - 8. Genres / Styles

How the Discogs database uses genres and styles

Discogs divides music first by genre. We use the word genre for a main group, for example 'Electronic' or 'Rock'. These genres are then further broken down by style. Style is basically the same as a sub-genre, so 'Drum And Bass' is a style of 'Electronic', for example. Main Genres

This is a list of the main genres that are used at Discogs:

Blues
Brass & Military
Children's
Classical
Electronic
Folk, World, & Country
Funk / Soul
Hip-Hop
Jazz
Latin
Non-Music
Pop
Reggae
Rock
Stage & Screen

Genres can be added together, for example, Electronic and Rock to make Electronic Rock.

A list of the current styles, with some descriptions, is available on the unofficial wiki.

PLEASE NOTE!

At present, Discogs aims to limit the number of styles it accepts for the style field. This is because excess styles, or sub-sub-genres, cause the drop down list on the submission form to become unmanageable, and more confusing to use.
