| Profile: | In the 1950s, many established, independent US labels had no Canadian office. So they would lease their masters to one of several Canadian companies, of which Compo was one. They had several labels for different formats. Their pop records came out on the Apex label, in the "Specialty Series." A great deal of American hits were issued in Canada on Apex, well into the 1960s.
In the late 1960s, Compo became the Canadian division of Decca Records, which in turn was bought out in the early 1970s by MCA, whose name it carries to this day.
Over the years, Apex released fewer and fewer records, as most US labels had secured Canadian distribution elsewhere. But before disbanding, The Stampeders had one album on Apex, which by 1977, was rather an unglorious claim. There have been no label retrospective CDs from Apex or its Canadian artists. The songs they issued are only available on an ever-decreasing supply of old records, and as such, have been relegated to the dustbin of history.
