D.J. International Records

Profile:
One of the larger two original Chicago house-music labels (the other being Trax Records). Founded in the mid-1980s, it released lots of deep, hard, soulful, and acid house tracks. In the late 1980s, it released many hip-house tracks as well. The label’s releases built one of history’s everlasting foundations of house music. International hits included Joe Smooth's “Promised Land” and "Fast" Eddie Smith's “Acid Thunder,” who, together with Kenny "Jammin" Jason, produced 1987’s smash “Can U Dance,” one of house music’s breakthroughs and one of its everlasting hymns. Tyree’s “Turn up the Bass” was one of the first and best hip-house tracks.

Some releases were licensed to Westside Records (2) in Britain and BCM Records in Germany; single releases were licensed to different labels worldwide.

DJ International’s catalog has been in limbo since the label shut its doors in the early 1990s. The rights for Europe were granted to High Fashion Music B.V. in the Netherlands.

There was a pdf press release dated January 7, 2007 on the Phuture Trax Records website stating their intent for acquisition of the DJ International Records catalog. Under the new agreement, it stated that Phuture Trax retains the exclusive distribution rights for all music within the DJ International catalog and that the music will be packaged as collections and distributed across the globe under the Phuture Trax label. No definitive date has been given at all at this time on if or when the releases will become available to the public.

I am really stunned that nobody, up until now, made a comment on such a groundbreaking and historically important label! This label was the first "real" house music label and - as many people can easily see through its catalogue - released most of the early and influential house classics. And it's no secret that many of this music still sounds as fresh and vital as back then. Respect is due to DJ International!
