E. Berliner's Gramophone

Profile:
Formed: 1895, Washington, DC, United States
Closed: October 3, 1901, Washington, DC, United States

Emile Berliner started marketing his newly invented gramophone records (as opposed to the earlier phonograph cylinder records) in 1889 in Europe. In 1892 he founded the United States Gramophone Company in Washington D.C. which offered the first disc records in November 1894 on the Berliner Gramophone label. This label was merged in the Victor Talking Machine Co. in the United States at the end of 1900.

Berliner's UK branch, founded 1897 in London, was called The Gramophone Company (later The Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd.) and became part of Electric and Musical Industries Ltd. (EMI Records) in 1931. In 1898 a German branch of the Gramophone Company was started, Deutsche Grammophon.
