Kama Sutra was initially a production company when its partners,
Artie Ripp, Hy Mizrahi and Phil Steinberg, teamed up with ex MGM executive Art Kass to turn
Kama Sutra into a label distributed under agreement with MGM. After a number of years of success the team began to extricate themselves from the MGM deal, forming the independent Buddah label steered by
Neil Bogart whilst continuing to run
Kama Sutra.
Both companies enjoyed success,
Kama Sutra with acts such as
Lovin' Spoonful, The, and Buddah with
Lemon Pipers, The charting at No1. When
Kama Sutra was free of its deal in 1969 the label was then distributed, along with sister label Eleuthra, under the parent Buddah label. For a short period a Sutra label also existed run by Art Kass. However, by 1986 the hits had dried up and Buddah was sold, its back catalog and that of
Kama Sutra, eventually coming under ownership of BMG.
Pre BMG material usually shows the
Kama Sutra (pre Buddah & post Buddah parent) address of 810 Seventh Avenue, N.Y. 10019. The Buddah/
Kama Sutra back catalog is currently managed by BMG's Legacy Recordings.
