Obey Records

Profile:
Initially a street art campaign, Obey Giant grew from a South Carolina (USA) sticker design into an brand and company.

The design that Shepard Fairey created in 1986 in Charleston, South Carolina, was initially a sticker based on the image of André René Roussimoff (better known as Andre the Giant), the French wrestler turned actor. The design was a parody of skate groups, or posses, and of consumer culture at large. The design changed in the late 1990s, when Titan Sports, Inc. (better known as World Wrestling Federation) re-claimed the name and image of Andre the Giant via lawsuit. The new Obey Giant logo was a direct homage to John Carpenter's movie "They Live."

Fairey extended his design style into a variety of posters and campaigns, including commercial realms. Continuing in a commercial path, Obey Giant became a company, making clothing and expanded into music, circa 2004.
