Pale Music Int Labelbiography
Pale Music was started in 2000 by Steve Morell in London. Steve always moved back and forth between Berlin and London before finally settling in Berlin in 2001 because he felt that „London was kind of sleeping at that time“. When he recognized what was happening in the early days of the new century in Berlin with many people moving there and starting to work there, he knew he had to put all his energy into Pale Music. Berlin captured the spirit of London in the late 70s & early 80s.
After the first record „Psychomania“ in 2001, which was still EBM/Industrial influenced, he had the idea to produce a CD which showed the world what was really going on in the
Berlin Underground. He asked the people he knew from the past and people he met on the Berlin scene for tracks to do the first „Berlin Insane“ compilation in 2003. Mocky, Peaches, Gonzales, Kid & Khan, Stereo Total and many others connected with the concept and it seemed to be something that the whole of Berlin was waiting for as 1500 clubbers was rocking till the early morning.
The world was still watching and reacting, people tried to push Pale Music into the hype of Electroclash but the whole attitude was quite different; it was more rough & dirty but
gentle at the same time. Pale Music worked & still works together with people from different genres like S-Express, Einstürzende Neubauten, Renegade Soundwave, Malaria, Wolfgang Press, Peaches, Glamour to Kill, Miss Yetti, Whitey and many more.
The music that comes out of Pale Music is more avantgarde, rock’n ‘roll, disco, electro and punk related, that´s why you cant tite Pale Music Int as an electro label.
Pale Music released several deluxe edition EPs with Namosh,
Glamour to Kill, Mignon, Film2 (formerly Nouvelle Vague) and some electropunk albums like Moimir Papalescu & The Nihilists.
Meanwhile, by 2004 “Berlin Insane II“ hit the scene proving more successful than its predecessor and featuring more British acts who had a connection to Berlin. For the launch party the main Pale Music acts performed on a ship in front of the Reichstag (German Parliament building) and the Universal Building and 2000 people joined the party.
The same year Pale Music turned into a Publishing Company.
In 2005 „Berlin Insane III“ was released featuring more than 40 artists and DJs from all over the world and from several different labels (Shitkatapult, Gigolo, 1234 Rec., Moonbootique etc.) and the launch party saw more than 2000 people from all over Europe celebrating from Saturday evening till Monday morning. „Berlin Insane“ today stands for the biggest annual party & compilation in the city. After the launch, Berlin Insane hit the road
and went on a tour of some of Europe’s major cities gathering good press along the way.
The same year Punx Soundcheck were booked to play Berlin which started a love affair between the London duo and Pale Music. Their first double 12“ „Berlin Moon“ was released
on Pale featuring guest vocals from Marc Almond.
2006 was a busy year for Pale Music. In February they released the debut album of the British-Berlin based band Neonman. The song “Rich Kids“ from “Gift of the Gab” reached
the German top 40. Heavy rotation on Berlin’s popular underground radio Motor FM turned the track into a hit.
The Berlin Insane IV, which was held successfully at Volksbühne in October 2006 had around 2000 people rocking till the early morning !
Punx Soundcheck’s released their debut LP, “When Machines Ruled the World“, while The Scandals put out a disco-inflected single as the first of the new Pale Music 12“ series “Pale Music Serial Killer Tracks”.
