Planet Dog

Profile:
Small UK Ambient / Techno / Breakbeat / Goa Trance label. Off-shoot of the organisation that ran Club Dog in London and the infamous touring Megadog parties. The two biggest acts on the label, Banco de Gaia and Eat Static, had their first CD releases after signing to Planet Dog (prior to this they'd only released tapes and/or vinyl).

At first the label had separate numbering for singles (e.g. BARK 001 CDS/T) and albums (BARK CD/LP 001) but following mix-ups at the manufacturing plant they decided to adopt a common scheme for both (i.e. 005, 006 and 007 are albums only; 008, 009 and 010 are singles only; etc).

After the label closed, two further Planet Dog albums came out on the Liquid label: Michael Dog Summer Night Sessions and Planet Dog - Feed Your Head 04. There was also a collection of Peel Sessions by three Planet Dog acts on the Strange Fruit label: Planet Dog - Peel Sessions - Peel Your Head. Several Planet Dog releases were reissued in America on Mammoth, although many of the original Planet Dog releases are still available direct from the label website (link below).

As of July 2009, Planet Dog has released a double CD compilation of all 16 tracks that were originally released on Eat Static's 9 EP's (12" single and CD single) between 1993 and 1998. Most of the tracks only appeared on the EPs and the majority have been deleted for years! This is the first time that they've all been compiled onto one album.
Also featuring 2 storming PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED tracks ('Cocoon' and 'You Are Being Taken) dating from the early 1990's and recently rediscovered in the band's tape archive.

Reviews & Discussion

Review by kochiking Sep 25, 2007
Planet Dog Records brought together some of the finest and most unique electronic artists of the nineties.
Their eclectic blend of psy-trance,ambient techno, dub and chillout-to mention just a few of the genres covered-was second to none.
The Feed Your Head compilations and others which followed featuring Planet Dog legends Banco de Gaia and Eat Static, also brought to our attention a myriad of other weird and wonderful artists.
It really was a golden age for that type of music reflected in the popularity of Megadog which saw artists such as The Drum Club,Higher Intelligence Agency,Fluke,Zion Train and many others perform alongside the label's own acts.
It's a crying shame in my opinion that the likes of Children Of The Bong only put out one album and only five artists in total were signed up-Future Loop Foundation being the last.
I suppose that's one reason why I hold the label and it's releases so dear.
One of a kind for sure.

Planet Dog is one of the labels I miss the most. A label that brought us some of the most talented musicians we have in the psychedelic electronic music scene. Fantastic organic chill out music from Banco De Gaia, a new world of "alien" techno from the Eat Static guys, atmospheric drum n bass from Future Loop Foundation, high quality ambient in the Feed Your Head series, a new way of doing dub from Children Of The Bong etc etc. With other words, high quality stuff from beginning to end from this fantastic label. One of my favourite labels of all times, which introduced me to the taste I have today.
