Platipus

Profile:
Long-running and massively popular trance label based in the UK. Early releases were almost exclusively by label-co-owner Simon Berry and associates (recording as Union Jack, Clanger, Poltergeist, Art of Trance), but later the label branched out to include artists like Terra Ferma, Salamander and Quietman. Most famous releases include the smash-hit "Anomaly (Calling Your Name)" by Libra presents Taylor (a.k.a. BT and DJ Taylor, respectively), "Red Herring" and "Two Full Moons and a Trout" by Union Jack, and "Albion" by Air. After the success of releases like the aforementioned "Calling Your Name" and Art Of Trance's 1999 monster "Madagascar," the label started to take on a more epic trance style - a stark contrast to their early releases which were more in the classic and acid trance veins. In 2001, sub-label Gekko was formed, followed in 2003 by Platipus Euro, the latter of which focused more on the Euro Trance sound.

Platipus was one of those labels from the middle of the nineties until the end of the century you could buy records buy nearly blind from and you were as good as never really disappointed. Without a doubt this label has a special place in the heart and mind of many musiclovers and has also left his remarkable and unique sound to the (Hard)Trance-Scene: Classics from Union Jack like Cactus or Two Full Moons And A Trout as well as Art Of Trance - Kaleidoscope or Octopus or the famous Libra pres. Taylor - Anomaly - Calling your Name.
Brillant and simply timeless.

Despite much great naysaying, I still like this label an awful lot. Sure, a lot of the thunder's gone, but they still manage to put out releases that feel slightly left of center. Their sub-label, Gekko, is especially consistent with quirk and curiosity, while Platipus Euro is a little more loud and raucous. The label isn't trying to write out its own history, as is evidenced by their re-releasing many older records. They're just trying to stay afloat in changing times. Times where trance isn't even sure of its own direction anymore. It's perfectly fair to not like their current output, but it's also only fair to acknowledge their significance.

One of the very few trance labels that's still near and dear to my heart. I personally didn't like the wimpier flavors that starting coming around when they got new sleeve designs in 2000, but they've still managed to keep the production standards relatively high, it seems. But old-time Platipus records can still bring the house down. Relentless, layered acid lines and tribal madness, especially on early Union Jack releases. Melodic trance lovers: buy, beg or steal a couple of releases from before 1997; I can guarantee that you'll be shocked and provoked.
