Tommy Boy Entertainment was founded January 2002 as the successor to
Tommy Boy Music. Founder Tom Silverman wanted to concentrate on the records he wanted to make without the further interference of Warner Music, which wanted greater unit sales than Tommy Boy was producing. In ending their relationship, Warner Music kept the rights all Tommy Boy Music product released until 2002. Rhino/Atlantic handles that back catalog. Tommy Boy Entertainment's focus has been primarily dance music, but it still releases hip-hop music occasionally. Tommy Boy Entertainment also licenses the use of its logo to Warner Music for the older releases and the reissues on Rhino/Atlantic.
