During its lifespan the Virgin France S.A. entity acted as:

• the French branch of the Virgin group of labels, releasing and distributing in France artists signed to the UK, US or german branches and their sublabels,
• a proper label with its own A & R department, signing and releasing french artists such as Etienne Daho, Les Rita Mitsouko, Les Negresses Vertes, Alain Souchon or Mano Negra,
• a distributor, licensing and distributing in France many of the biggest indie labels of the 80s and 90s, such as Factory, Rough Trade (UK), Creation Records, 4AD or Mute Records Ltd. and their sublabels, later via Labels,
• the parent company of many sublabels, such as Delabel or Source Records (FR).

In 2002 Virgin France S.A. became Virgin Music (France) - post 2002 releases must be entered under this other page.

Please note that Virgin France S.A. was not set up until 1984 - all French pressings labelled as Virgin products issued before 1984 should be listed under Virgin with a mention of the distributing company if given on release. Note that distribution and licensing deals were, until the incorporation of Virgin France S.A., often set up on an artist basis.

Virgin France S.A. distribution code would be PM XXX - releases bearing a different distribution code (for instance AE XXX) do not belong on this label page but on Virgin instead.
