Tha Ultimate Nitzhonot/Uplifting/Nitzhogoa Database!
A database for all Nitzhonot & Uplifting artists...in progress :)
Obviously there were more Nitzhonot artists than only the ones we can browse in Discogs. For example, Vibe Tribe (2) had a Nitzhonot alias, but as no tracks got released under this name, it's excluded out of this database.
Anybody who has good suggestions or information to add is welcome to do so of course! :)
In the following list I'll make a distinction between 3 genres:
* Nitzhonot, which is the rather oriental-influenced spin-off from Goa music.
* Uplifting, which rose from the ashes of Nitzhonot in and around Athens.
* Nitzhogoa, which is far from being an accepted genre or style. I just put it in here because I would like to label a specific type of music that I love very much, but this has no objective value at all. Basically, Nitzhogoa tries to unite elements from Nitzhonot and Goa in one kind of music.
Of course the distinctions I make here could be critisized when looking to some of the artists in this list. One of the biggest difficulties remains the question on how to classify something as Nitzhonot and something else as Uplifting. I think there are two ways to solve this problem. A first way to deal with this issue, is by classifying all Israeli artists as "Nitzhonot" and all Greek artists as "Uplifting". However, some early artists from Greece sound pretty much exactly like their Israeli fellows, and vice versa. Therefore one may argue that it's a lot more accurate to distinct the two genres by first listening the music itself and then drawing the conclusion if something should be considered Nitzho or Uplifting. This is the second way of dealing with the distinction-problem.
Personally I use some kind of mashup of the two criteria. Imo the decision whether or not something is Nitzhonot or Uplifting has to be made mainly through an analysis of the music. Nitzhonot tends to have some Goa-influences, or at least arabic scales. Uplifting leans more towards Hardtrance and nowadays some producers also draw inspiration from Full-On.
This way of reasoning explains why I store Greek artists such as Cyan (4) and Naga (2) under the "Nitzhonot"-file.
Still, the other criteria plays a role. Tayfoon for example, and artist from Israel with a tendency towards epic and melodic tracks, will be classified as Nitzhonot. In this particular case I consider the fact that the guy was an Israeli important enough to make him fall under the Nitzhonot genre. Hm, I should explain this more thoroughly...will do so later...if anybody is interested in this anyway :P...
