What can you say about this album that has not been said already, but there I go. This album was and remains today of the best albums in the history of electronic music, the prodigy in 1997 revolutionized the music market with this album and conquered the hearts of many people around the globe. When you get the recognition breakbeat world, always in the underground, with this album surfaced the world with anger and aggression. This powerful blend of Breakbeats, punk attitude, deep bass, synthesizers acids etc ... was explosive. Many look forward to more, a second part of the fat of the land would be great. I think a level of this album is not never hear anymore. 10. Juandibreakbeat. CANALYOUTUBE JUANDIBREAKBEAT

the fat of the land is the prodigy's best album, and it's way better than experience. while experience has corny hardcore tracks that destroyed the hardcore era, this album made big beat one of the most memorable eras in music.

I expect "disagree" ratings to be raining down on me, but this highly overrated album was not that good when it came out and hasn't aged well either.

The singles "Firestarter" and "Breathe" were great, as they went further into the direction The Prodigy had taken with "Poison", but the rest of the album is made up of pretty formulaic big beat / industrial sounds that can be heard on dozens of other records released around this time, most notably The Chemical Brothers' "Dig Your Own Hole". Also, the fusion of breakbeats, rock and psychedelica / world music influences that can be found on "Smack My Bitch Up" and "Narayan" had already been done way better on a number of Chemical Brothers tracks before.

The selection of samples don't do the album any good either: For a group that had just done a concept album against the criminalisation of the rave scene with "Music For The Jilted Generation", it's really disappointing to start an LP with Kool Keith talking about "smacking his bitch". There had also already been way too many techno tracks up until 1997 that had used samples from early Beastie Boys songs, as is done here on "Funky Shit".

About the choice of guest singers: I have to admit that I actually liked the music of cheesy pop-rock groups Republica and Kula Shaker back then, so I don't really have a general problem with The Prodigy inviting their lead singers for this album. The problem is though that they do a pretty half-assed job on the songs ("Fuel My Fire" and "Narayan"), and it's obvious that they were invited only so that the records company could write some big names on top of the records and market this album not only to ravers, but also to the indie rock scene.

All in all, what you get with "The Fat Of The Land" is two great singles and a handful of average big beat DJ tools, the rest is filler material.

who can mix rock, pop, techno, punk, dance, mantras, guitars, rave, acid, indian voices and a supermagnetic frontman like keith? The Prodigy. Smack my bitch must be the best track in this album for dancers, firestarter for rockers, breathe for ravers and serial thrilla for punks. They make history, Liam make the sound of the ninetties dude. Like I said, best fking album of history!!

”What such a bullet-headed ten-track collection proves is, for once, startlingly clear. Having set out to create a record that plays firmly to their strengths (in a word, touring), the Prod have tailored their brutalist sound and deeply tongue-in-cheek cyber-vision to a point where it serves as an aural foil to the mind-boggling overload of their live show. There’s barely a second goes by amidst the hailstorm of Wu-Tang-esque martial arts samples, droning synths and Gizz’s kamikaze guitar breaks on ’The Fat Of The Land’ when you’re not picturing Leeroy hot-stepping away at his epileptic-on-an-ice rink anti-dancing, Keith bug-eyed and shivering like a (strontium) dog who’s just clambered out of the local duck pond, or Maxim foaming at the mouth and inciting us to, well, smell the glove.”

Prodigy really changed thier style with this one, fair play for originality but this did'nt have that same impressive vibe like "Experience" did. It's more slick than Jilted Generation though, more "put together" on a Productive standpoint me thinks...

quite a change in sound on Liam's behalf on this record. Maxim and Keith have become more involved and their vocal contributions make this album that much better. Fat of the Land has a more hardcore/industrial sound to it than older Prodigy, but is still a staple for any collection, prodigy fan or not.

One thing that does annoy me about the vinyl release is the way the beats between Narayan and Firestarter were dealt with. Whilst I personally consider that this whole Chemical Bros-style section is unnecessary and adds nothing to the album, it is so much more a part of Narayan than it is Firestarter. Yet the beats are placed at the start of Firestarter, which is the first track on a different side to Narayan.
