"Trout Mask Replica" was the 3rd official 'Magic Band' album and 1st double vinyl on Zappa & Cohen's independent 'Straight' label. It was released in the fall of 1969 in the US & Canada (cover logo white), with a 6-page roll-fold insert, and without insert in the UK (cover logo black) and Germany. It was also released in the US later that year on 8-Track & Cassette.

When opened out, the 2-fold insert has a photo of a school-age Vliet on the left page, sketches by Vliet's cousin Victor Hayden (aka The Mascara Snake) center page, and a 'Manta Ray' poem on right page (front, back & inner facing page respectively, when folded). Lyrics are on the 3 reverse pages. US album issues can be identified by the Straight address on label; 5455 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 1700, Los Angeles 90036. It was manufactured* & distributed in the UK by CBS and in Germany by Electrola Gesellschaft m.b.H. Köln. The Canadian issue was pressed (by Herbert S. Berliner's plant, Compo Company Ltd.*) in an unusual auto-coupled sequence; AC, BD** - which, annoyingly, requires 'shuffling' on turn-over.

In January 1970 the Reprise Records catalog 2 MS 2027 appeared on label issues in the US, using the original gatefold (with catalog 1053). Some issues appeared with blue 'Bizarre' labels. In Europe this became the Reprise Records 64024 catalog, which was then prefixed by 'K' in the 'Kinney' period of Reprise history. Releases then adopted the Warner Bros. & WEA (Warner Elektra Atlantic) identities thereafter.

Events surrounding band members in the recording of this album are revealed in the "Grow Fins" box set booklet, or elsewhere on the Web. However, it is worth noting the work John 'Drumbo' French did in transcribing and helping bring Vliet's concepts to fruition. He is not credited on the album. By the time the band toured on its release (appearing with its producer Zappa at BYG's seminal 5-day "Actuel Festival" in Belgium in October 1969†) he was replaced by Jeff Bruchell (referred to by Vliet as 'Drumbo' or 'Fake Drumbo' by others). Bass-player Marker, of 'Rising Sons (2)', appears on tracks Moonlight On Vermont and Veteran's Day Poppy - recorded earlier at Sunset Sound. The remainder were recorded (using the T.T.G. 16-track) at Whitney Studios in Glendale, California, or were field-recordings at the 'Magic Band' house.

In late April 2011, America's Library of Congress added "Trout Mask Replica" into it's "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" entries in the National Recording Registry, selected by the Librarian of Congress and the National Recording Preservation Board.

*Manufacturers IDs on back covers.
**The 1972 Australian issue is in the correct AD, BC auto-coupled sequence, as is a first USA. All other issues seem to be sequential AB, CD releases.
†Understanding how the band's activities 'fitted' in the music scene of the time is worthwhile by reading 'Profile' at this Discogs link: Actuel Festival.

this listing applies most closely to my copy, however, mine differs in these ways:
matrix etchings are 2MS-1-2027 JWS1 #1 / 2MS-2-2027 JWS1 #1 / 2MS-3-2027 JWS1 #1 / 2MS-4-2027 JWS1 #1; inner sleeves are perforated send-aways for the 'limo' compilation rather than the 'supergroup' one; and labels are the tan reprise steamboat type with the orange :r box. as the 'limo' comp was released in '77 i'm assuming this is an even later issue utilizing the original straight label jacket. no barcode, no year on spine, no lyric sheet, albums are sides i/ii & iii/iv.

A milestone LP which has probably stimulated more debate amongst my friends over the years than any other. Some hate it with a passion, some love it with equal passion. Let's put it like this ... you will never ever forget what it sounds like once you've heard it!
Crazy poems, even crazier music; the brain child of Don van Vliet, pouring forth his mind undiluted and straight through his harangued musicians and producer Frank Zappa.
The bizarre thing is it sounds and has been previously argued that none of the band could play their instruments. I have seen The Magic Band and let me tell you - these guys can play! Note for note! Amazing musicians all...
If you love formulaic blues re-re-hashed a zillion times over AVOID...
If you are prepared to OPEN up your mind, this little fella will blow it clean out of your cranium and when it finally returns home nothing will ever be the same again.

Trout Mask Replica is Captain Beefheart's masterpiece, a fascinating, stunningly imaginative work that still sounds like little else in the rock & roll canon. Given total creative control by producer and friend Frank Zappa, Beefheart and his Magic Band rehearsed the material for this 28-song double album for over a year, wedding minimalistic R&B, blues, and garage rock to free jazz and avant-garde experimentalism. Atonal, sometimes singsong melodies; jagged, intricately constructed dual-guitar parts; stuttering, complicated rhythmic interaction — all of these elements float out seemingly at random, often without completely interlocking, while Beefheart groans his surrealist poetry in a throaty Howlin' Wolf growl. The disjointedness is perhaps partly unintentional — reportedly, Beefheart's refusal to wear headphones while recording his vocals caused him to sing in time with studio reverberations, not the actual backing tracks — but by all accounts, the music and arrangements were carefully scripted and notated by the Captain, which makes the results even more remarkable. As one might expect from music so complex and, to many ears, inaccessible, the influence of Trout Mask Replica was felt more in spirit than in direct copycatting, as a catalyst rather than a literal musical starting point. However, its inspiring reimagining of what was possible in a rock context laid the groundwork for countless future experiments in rock surrealism, especially during the punk/new wave era.

Originally released as a double album, it was always going to be viewed as an avant-garde rock, blues and jazz oddball milestone. Over thirty-five years on, debate continues as to the roles of importance between Frank Zappa's production and Beefheart or even whether the band could play at all. The band were reputedly 'imprisoned' in a shack by Beefheart and fed on beans for weeks before they recorded the entire 28 track opus in a mere eight and a half hours. Needs to be listened to as a whole. As much a classic for the cover and the 'catchphrase', "A squid eating dough, in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbus, got me?” No argument, all-time ‘Far Out’ album ever.
