To me Machine Head is the best Deep Purple (besides the classic IN ROCK of course) album. The MK 2 Crew was the best Deep Purple Version anyway. Everything fits perfectly together. The music has a lot of power and punch. The Bass is strong and the drums are fantastic ; esp. the hi hats part the denser sound parts a lot like in modern Techno Trax. The organ adds a real strange vibe towards that often typical Heavy Metal Sound created by Ritchie Blackmore's Lead Guitar and the Vocals of Ian Gillan. MACHINE HEAD stays interesting all the time. Even the often played Tunes like Smoke On The Water just fit in the context of this album without sticking out.
My favourite song is LAZY. The organ brings so much flavour to that dope song it's just great. Machine Head is one of the essential early 70ies Blueprint Hard Rock records, together with FIREBALL it represents the best in the career of this Band. I am glad i passed on these two albums when they came out. So i can enjoy them even better by now. It is not easy to find good hard and fast Rock albums. Most are dominated either by the singer or the Lead Guitar - or the whole sound sucks and stays formulaic.
The MK 2 version of Deep Purple was one of the rare ocassions where 5 exceptional talented and crafted musicians came together and just let it out all out. The results are some of the quintessential Hard Rock Tunes.
No wonder there is even a Band called after this fine album.
