Although this album is officially self-titled (or simply untitled), its title has been called into confusion. Most fans, as well as the band themselves, refer to it as the "Mama" album. In some cases, notably amongst the Genesis online community, it has been referred to as the "Shapes" or "Gold Shapes" album because of the front cover artwork.

This particular CD is not from 1987, but from 1992. It has an EMI barcode, after EMI purchased Virgin Records from Richard Branson. EMI promptly deleted all the existing Genesis (and other Virgin label releases with the barcode 5 0129 8xxxxx2x numbers) and replaced them with 0777 7 xxxxx 2 x numbers).
