Being a massive fan of the Smiths and there output of magical melancholy music.
I must admit though "break up the family" is Morrissey’s
defining moment!
From the opening sounds of Andrew Paresi's bongo drums and the clock like sound that repeats throughout the whole three minutes and fifty three seconds.
The slide guitar sound from legendary Mancunian Vini Reilly hits the most perfect spot and kicks in with a simple but such effective drum pattern along with Stephen Streets bass, amazing “but simple” guitar riff
Enter Morrissey’s sublime words of “ I want to see all my friends tonight” , “Home late full of hate despise the ties that bind” and “ captain of games solid frames as I stood on the touchline” just melts my head and heart”
An absolute genius track of production that any real music lover would enjoy
Though I wonder who the great man was talking about???

Anyone not grading this album 6 out of 5 is not worthy of this album. If you're not a fan of Morrissey, you will never be a friend of mine.

Statements like these delivered without a hint of irony - and off course I concur a 100 pct to any and all of these ;o) - are heard throughout the indie community when the topic is Morrissey. And nothing in his career as a solo artist matches Viva Hate in terms of weltschmerz.

Track 3 "Everyday is like Sunday" tells the story of a grown up visiting his hometown, when seing a beach bench from his childhood he is reminded how he once had his clothes stolen from it. If you get the depths of this you get Mozzer's world! The many, unexpected shapes humiliation comes in, how you singlehanded must face up to a cruel world always out to put you down, and how the simplest things in life can convey the most distinct feelings. And the way these lines are delivered?! The song still sends shivers down my spine and I must have heard this album more times than a thousand times.

Musically and lyricwise this album is a true pop-pearl and way, way, way, above anything else. Need I pick one album with me to a desert island, I'd pick this. Boy, it would be a melancholic journey, but in such style ...

Just get it, okay?!

Morissey was never better than this.
