Cepia's _Natura Morta_ opens with the lingering tones of "Braille Wounds," a title of curious violence for such a ambient track. But the post-rock guitar and crunchy beats of "Opening Parade" or the ringing bell-tones and darker bass of "Clay Face." Huntley Miller keeps his tracks short and sweet, rather than extending them indefinitely, as many musicians are wont to do. At the same time, I'd be interested as well, to hear how these tracks may have further developed -- perhaps by picking up subthemes and variations. "Dot," for instance, could have gone in some different directions, but as it is, it's a small crystal rather than a full gem. But where Miller has an opportunity to expand his tracks -- listen to how "Hoarse" builds its layers -- it's delightful. The title track starts with an off-kilter beat, but brings in a ghostly melody. A strong album.
