So, is EVERYTHING AT ONCE by Im Not a Gun electronica, jazz, IDM or what? Well, its a little bit of all of them, and if the skittering beats and guitar work of the opening track "Jet Stream" doesnt convince you, nothing will. John Tejada has never been one to be pigeonholed, and this collaboration with guitarist Takeshi Nikimoto shows him going in yet another direction. "Frequent Syndrome" gets into more familiar IDM percussion and tones, but "These Thoughts Break" and “Long Division” sound almost like a traditional jazz combo (though with better synth pads and reverb effects). “Make Sense and Loose” has that Tejada tech-house kick drum in it, and it’s so smooth, you’d swear it was silk. The speedy looped breaks of “Vacant Sky” underscore the quiet guitar atop. The final track, “Flash Bang Imagery,” drifts across our senses with some haunting overlays. EVERYTHING AT ONCE doesn’t quite live up to its title, however: it’s the necessary pieces, at the necessary times.
