More IDM from one half of the Funkstorung crew plus one other on DEADLY WIZ DA DISKO. The hip-hop influences definitely point towards Funkstorung's later work, but the title track shows off the complex beat sculpting that made them famous. "I Gonna Give It To You" mixes the beats with bits of chopped up MCs. The beats are at the forefront, as evidenced on "I Gonna Give It To You" and the Scream-sampling "Wrong Number." "Horns of Jericho" is carried along on what sounds like whale calls and a re-arranged MC. "What the F*** I Got To Say" in fact says little, but tosses small bits of piano and horns to speak for instead -- until the break, when the sample comes in. Deadly, yes. Disco, no.

Fans of Funkstorung will love this record, as Chris de Luca appears to contribute most of the weird beat tweaking that Funkstorung is based on. Michael Fakesch's solo work is good too, but darker and more abstract. Deadly wiz da Disko is more concerned with keeping a dance groove alive than with twisting beats and sounds into oblivion as is often the case with Funkstorung. The great artwork is yet another reason to add this one to your collection.
