Reviews & Discussion

Rated 3/5
Review by scoundrel Jun 26, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
The Idjut Boys have perfected their own blend of laidback disco dub, and on LIFE, THE SHOEING YOU DESERVE (aided by Quakerman), they put their skills on full display. “Copulating Drum” with its off-kilter chanting and tonal synth pads. The filters and layers on “Pay the Fare” begin to sound almost minimal in their execution; the deep thunk of “Suicide Lover” only reinforces this feel. But it’s not until “Radio Rage” that the funk really starts to shine through with any force, and “Caxton Gibbett” picks up that funk and runs with it. “Frogs Arrrse” is wonderfully playful, that it makes me wish that its cheekiness had permeated more of the album. The beats are so deep, they sometimes feel subterranean. The numerous interludes don’t as much stitch the album together as add to the overall sense of eclecticism (how could you not love “Tea Tray Formerly Known as Coffee Table”?), though some sound like interesting tracks (“Dum Dum De Dum,” “Mid Life Crisis,” “Plucky”) that were possibly aborted too soon. A messy but worthwhile experience.
