After catching a Nebula II P.A. recently I was lucky enough to bump into Joe Nebula in the chill out area, I wanted to give him props for producing one of my favourite Reinforced tunes. His eyes lit up when it turned out to be ‘Clocked It’ – a track on an EP which was largely dismissed and fell into obscurity. It’s easy to understand why this track never made the impact that it should have; it didn’t fit with where Reinforced where heading at that point. But those open minded enough to look beyond the jungle where treated to a real crossover dark and atmospheric brooding techno masterpiece, complete with marching 4/4 beats and acid rhythms. Joe was over the moon that there are actually people out there who do appreciate it, and it was nice to be able to tell him this in person.

He was less enthusiastic when talking about ‘Eye Memory’ on the flipside, which apparently Reinforced made them produce in order to have something on the EP which was more label friendly. Personally, I still think ‘Eye Memory’ is another fantastic track with a stuttered hook, bleeps, and melancholic strings providing a great intro before kicking in with some lovely subtle breakbeats. It’s Jungle Techno at its finest, which I find fits in far more nicely with the kind of stuff Basement and Formation where putting out at the time rather than Reinforced.

Allthough I can appreciate the tracks on 'Eye Memory', I have to confess that I was a little bit disappointed with this release. With the tracks sounding more minimal than the previous dark, techno excursions on 'Peacemaker/X-Plore H-Core' (original and remixed versions).

However 'Clocked It' is the real shining light on the EP here. Opening with fluttering keys and ominous synths. It then morphs into a pounding 4/4 beat and complimenting breaks before adding a nice and twisting acid throb. This EP definitely hinted at Nebula II's progression towards techno and trance. Still worth grabbing though for those who like to try a different style of hardcore.

Nebula II became a lot more techy here, ditching most of the breaks/rave sounds in favour of drum machines/synths.
Instead of turning left to go the jungle they turned right into trance space.
