Reviews & Discussion

Rated 4/5

I guess the opening track, "Sidetrak," could be considered dubstep, but it's perhaps a bit too clattery for purists. So much their loss, then, because Boxcutter's ARECIBO MESSAGE takes the genre in new directions. "Mya Rave v2" goes for a squelchier sound with, yes, that good ol' rave feeling. Elsewhere, "Arcadia 202" drifts into more abstract territory, like a spaceship careening out of control, while "Old School Astronomy" takes a mellow approach at first before rocketing into the stars. And is that a bit of soul vocals coming through on "A Familiar Sound"? Why, yes, it is. The "Otherside Remix (Earth is My Spaceship)" introduces actual dub to the dubstep, and some ghostly jazz trumpets toot their way onto "A Cosmic Parent." A strange and fascinating album, one that goes in some bold directions.

I found this album to be a huge change in direction and sound for Boxcutter. Glyphic was more or less a more polished version of Oneiric but this 3rd album, Arecibo Message is an entirely different beast from Barry Lynn. The core of the music remains dubstep but there is a lot of other influences going on here: acid, house and even drum & bass. The end result is pretty pleasing and there are some real monsters on here (the title track is godly). In my opinion, Boxcutter has really proven himself of this album and I have no problem pitting him as a equal to the other king of dubstep, Burial.
