Reviews & Discussion

Rated 4/5
Review by SirBonkers91 Jun 29, 2010 (edited 11 months ago)
This album is notable for being the last we ever got and will ever get (during his lifetime) from the king of pop. For this album Michael got together with Rodney Jerkins who was the biggest producer in R&B at the time (although he'd soon lose that unofficial title to the Neptunes.) Released roughly eight years before he died last year this was objectively a massive comeback (13 million units sold with relatively little promotion) but for Michael's standards a bit of a letdown. The album didn't really have any big hits, wasn't followed by a massive wold tour, didn't sell enough copies to fill up the grand canyon and was objectively speaking a rather tame bland R&B record with a few songs that are cheesy as fuck. Anyone of his albums after "Bad" would fit this description but still... You'd expect just a little bit more from world's best selling artist.

The album did have a few positive surprises also. After MJ had been in tabloids for [insert any random allegation here, it has probably been said about Jacko] and people had forgotten all about the man's music this proved he could, if he actually entered a studio, still sing his ass off. Also, despite not being a world changing album (how many people who aren't James Brown or Dr. Dre get to fundamentally change the world of music TWICE during their career?) it was a confirmation of Mike's versatility. The 2001 styled R&B suited him well, also because a lot of it was modelled after his music. The album kicks off well with the funky rhythm-piano-based Biggie featuring (R.I.P. to both the king of pop and the king of NY) "Unbreakable".

While Michael was anything but invincible or unbreakable when this came out it still does work because of how good the song is; it's a self fullfilling prophecy. Even the post-mortum Biggie verse isn't out of place on here.

The next two songs "Heartbreaker" and "Invincible" are very generic though (Having Rodney Jerkins doing most of your album is a mixed blessing, but it could be worse. If his latest album would've gotten out right before he died the King would've probably been autotuned beyond recognition so let's be glad that never came to be.)

"Break of Dawn" is one of my favorite songs ever though. This sex-song is so well sung and produced that you even forget that an African-American male looking like a old Asian woman is singing it. (The guy who wrote and produced it, Dr. Freeze, is actually the same guy who did Bell, Biv, DeVoe's NJS classic: "Poison" back in 1990 and apparently did noting in between the ten years between that song and this one.)

So that's how this album kicks off. The rest of the songs off this album falls in any of the three cathegories: Lame R&B song from 2001, generic song or pop classic. The excellent: "Butterflies" (the Trackmasters remix, which features Eve is better), "You Rock My World" (also has a superior remix version out there, it features Jay-Z) & "Whatever Happens" (Rock on Carlos Santana!) . The Lame: "Speechless" (Very bad idea, well executed), "2000 Wats" (I really wonder what kind of drug Teddy Riley was on in 2001, Nothing he did around that time sounds good.), "Dont walk Away" (Cheesy shit), "Cry" (R. Kelly & Michael on one syruppy shitstorm of a song), "Privacy" (hypocritical stuff), "The Lost Children" (!!!). The mediocre: "Heaven Can Wait", "You Are My Life", "Threataned".

So, there you have it. "Invincible" is really a standard 2001 R&B-album by one of the greatest performers of all time. I suggest you buy it if you're either into generic R&B, well executed (Usher's "8701" for example) or Jacko himself. Otherwise, leave it in the discount section of your local record store and buy "Thriller".

Rating: 7,0 outta 10.
Best songs: "Unbreakeable", "Break of Dawn", "Butterflies", "You Rock My World", "Whatever Happens"
