Jahcoozi go much more dub on their 3rd album, BAREFOOT WANDERER -- the opening track "Barefoot Dub" is drenched in reverb, even as a 4/4 kick drum thumps in halfway through. There's also more studio trickery here: the phased drum and vocals of "Zoom In Fantasize," but even the trickery can't help M. Sayyid's vox on "Powerdown Blackout." The cover of The Cure's "Close To Me" is all electro and bass -- strange and yet compelling. The rhythms are much more sedate than on their earlier albums, as evidenced by "Read the Books," and it robs Perera of her rat-a-tat rhythms, but Barbara Panther comes in on "Barricaded" to show off Jahcoozi's softer side. Deadbeat brings a thruming dub to his mix of "Watching You," making the track almost abstract, and "Wasteland" takes the album out on a spare note, with a few gamelan-like tones to support the growly vocals. A change of tempo in the Jahcoozi, definitely.
