Sunday Afternoon, Hacienda’s debut, certainly falls under the trip-hop period which plagued the late 90s. But, really, it’s not all that bad. In fact, certain parts of it are great. Sure, there are some long, somewhat aimless jams (the title track, for one), but other tracks are tight and have great beats. “Nightmare of Wax,” for example, has a great bassline going through it, while “Too Deep to Drive” is a dark dream that hums along. But the real standout tracks occur later in the album: the electro-funky “Diskoking”; the jazzy house track “Plusch”; the lazily psychedelic “Crazy Jason Spills My Bong.” Some quality chill out on here, perfect for any afternoon.
