Although not as strong as her prior two albums, "Black Reign" is probably the most important album Latifah has made to date. At the same time the lead single, "U.N.I.T.Y.," was released in America, Latifah landed a starring role in the hit FOX television show "Living Single," and critics wondered whether or not Latifah would be able to keep it real or if her fans would consider her a sell-out. By the time the Grammys came around about a half a year later, there weren't any doubts about Latifah's ability to still sell records, as she won a Grammy for Best Solo Rap Performance (for "U.N.I.T.Y.") and both "U.N.I.T.Y." and the double A-side "Just Another Day..."/"Weekend Love" had been certified gold in the U.S., as was the album itself.
