Minus 8’s debut album, BEYOND, is a jazztastic drum ‘n’ bass experience, smooth and warming, like a fine whiskey. There’s an appealing darkness here, from the nighttime mystery of “Beyond” to the thundering orchestral strings on “Recently at the Opera” (possibly the best track on the album). Even the short and industrial “Interlude” has darkness to spare. Elsewhere, “Zero G” goes more downtempo, while “4 AM” injects a ragga vibe into the mix. Interestingly enough, “Look to the Sky (In Cold Blood Mix) starts off very similarly to the original, but then shifts into disco funk. Weird, but worth it.
