Notes

note: The UK test-pressing only double-12" EP for "Q-Chastic" comes in a generic die-cut sleeve, and is limited to 100 copies. The records themselves, although pressed as a double-12", are actually meant to be cut [because of their groove placement] as two 10" records. Originally scheduled to have been issued as a double-7", this aborted EP will never be made available for commercial release.

note: The UK test-pressing only double-12" ep. for "Q-Chastic" does not feature a tracklisting anywhere either on its packaging, or on the records' labels. The corrections are as appear above.

note: The version of the untitled song, "---------- [q-chastic - #__]" is different than that of "CAT 002" by Q-CHASTIC, which appears on the UK cd for "The Philosophy Of Sound And Machine" (A.R.T. 2CD).

Hey, all you current 53 members who claim to have a copy of this release: Why not grab a digicam, make some neat pics and finally produce EVIDENCE that this record exists after all? :)

As for the most popular mp3 "bootleg", that has been floating around the net for almost six years: it's bogus (of course!), but let me elaborate a bit on that matter.
There are four untitled mp3s with the following playtimes: "A1" - 8:07 / "B1" - 9:06 / "C1" - 4:03 / "C2" 10:11. Track "C1" has been directly ripped from the "The Philosophy Of Sound And Machine" CD (Applied Rhythmic Technology, 1992). It's the only track released under the moniker Q-Chastic and it has been confirmed several times, that this track is NOT included on the mysterious Q-Chastic EP.
But what about the other tracks? Anyone who heard it surely has noticed that these Drum'n'Bass tracks sound way ahead of its time - and that's just because they are! They have been ripped from the Compilation "Food For Thoughts" (Shoebox, 1997), in particular: "A1" = John B 'Translucogene' / "B1" = Riddler 'Thoughts' / "C2" = SDR 'The Chimes'.

The fake bootleg was compiled just for fun, first time released into the Audiogalaxy network (around 2001/2, when it was still a filesharing platform) just to see how many people would fall for the (obvious!) fake. Many people did (and still do), the fake even made it into wikipedia until a wise editor deleted the bogus information.

How do I know? I know the person who did it (although I don't condone these actions, hehe), who - like me - never would have believed that this thing is floating around still today. I mean, come on: Look at the different production quality, the different sound, the different style - everything's different, and how anyone seriously could think of this being the real deal is a mystery to me.

A bootleg version of this has been floating around on the internet, is it real? Well there's ONE Q-Chastic song on it, from the ART compilation, however Grant has stated in an interview that although the song title represents the CAT# of the Q-Chastic release, the song doesnt actually appear on the Q-Chastic set. Other songs in the bootleg have audible sound differences from the song from ART. You can assume that the Q-Chastic bootleg is as "real" as the Star Wars Remix and Outside Violin Solo and if you think these are real Aphex, you're better off listening to DJ Tiesto than Aphex Twin.

Richard once confirmed to me that this release does exist. I asked him then (back in late 2000) if he had any plans to re-release it, but he said no. Other things he said to me that day came true (such as the creation of the Men label and the confirmation that he was about to put another album out (which turned out to be Drukqs)) when he was saying in several interviews around that time that he was about to end his career, so I don't think he was lying about Q-Chastic. Probably because I'm not a journalist. Yet, I too have to see someone with an actual copy of this one... just to be sure ! :)

What can I say about this record? Nothing really, because it doesn't exist, and should be taken off Discogs. I would challenge any of members that claim to own it to prove otherwise. There is absolutely no evidence of it ever having existed and all anyone for 15 years has ever had to go on were made up stories and bogus MP3s. The only CAT 002 that does exist is the Q-Chastic song on ARTs Philosophy of Sound and Machine CD. This track is what occupies that Rephlex catalog number and nothing else. It is a nice song as well.

This record is absolutely amazing. The A, B and C2 tracks are the mother of all atmospheric Drum & bass. Much more melodic, and soulfull than the average Richard D. James average style, with clever drum programing. Some made entire career repeating this formulas (only without the trademark rough details typical of AFX opuses) and I just can't believe they were made in 1992.
The C1 track is a pure electronica jewel, classic AFX early sound with a touch of UK version of the Detroit sound, it was in the same wavelength than Kirk De Giorgio's early Applied Rhythmic Technology.
