New York, 1978. There was never a question that this was the capital of Disco. Between Studio 54, Odyssey 2001 (the Brooklyn Disco featured in Saturday Night Fever), club culture fashions and Disco's legendary beginnings on Fire Island and the Loft, New York City secured its place in history as the birthplace of Disco. In spring of 1977, Steve Rubell (along with partner Ian Schrager) opened a night club called Studio 54. Almost immediately it became the most popular nightspot in NYC. Implementing a door policy that was unheard of at the time, Steve would choose from a massive crowd outside the doors of 54, creating a diverse mixture of all of Manhattan: models, celebrities, a grocery store merchant, a student, etc. Inside, Studio 54 was a non-stop party. Incorporating the most advanced sound system available and literally millions of lights, the DJ would create soundscapes and musical tornadoes that would allow people to become so overwhelmed that they would forget the world outside. In its first year, Studio 54 grossed more than 7 million dollars and became the most famous disco in the world. People that had never been to New York knew the address, tourists would beg to get in and hundreds would try to recreate the energy. In 1978 Billboard Magazine called it Steve Rubell's Disneyworld and later that year Casablanca Records released the legendary "A Night At Studio 54" LP. So famous was the name of the club, that not only was the album for sale nationally on TV, it became one of the most successul TV offer albums of its time. ... [continued] ...
