Reviews & Discussion

Rated 5/5
Review by Hw2004 May 23, 2008
"LEF" is the abbreviation of 'Loud Electronic Ferocious' and also means "guts" in dutch. And "guts" indeed seems to be the philosophy behind this this album, as it's as diverse and forward-thinking as you'd expect from Mr. Corsten.
Further developing his sound from his 2003 album "Right Of Way", "LEF" kicks off with an energetic electro trancer entitled "Are You Ready", followed by "Fire" and "LEF", both very energetic and danceable tunes that are sure to rock any dancefloor. And while "Fire" is influenced by the 80s synth-pop (featuring vocals from Duran Duran's Simon LeBon), "LEF" on the other hand benefits from a closer and stronger electro approach, which gives it the "explosion" it went for, transforming it in a dance bomb.
After the crazy start of the album, "Into The Dark" gives us a well-deserved break to catch our breath. Wonderful lyrics (sung by Howard Jones) and an irresistible melody inspired from the 80s synth-pop make this one stand out as a great example of cross-genre track.
Next in store is the classic "Galaxia", updated for 2006. Right from the dreamy intro you can tell that it was worth the effort, as this remake is so good that in time it will probably beat the actual original in becoming the "classic" version of the song.
"Galaxia" brought back the energy, but it's "Beautiful" that peaks the album. Widely regarded as on of the best tracks on the album, it has quickly become a DJ-favourite, with massive support from pretty all of the important figures in trance. And not in vain, as it's literally a monster tune, packed with a sound a bit closer (but not too similar) to that of "Right Of Way", trancey, fast and fresh. Top notch.
Cooling things down a bit, "Possession", the next track, takes one step on progressive ground, with a fatter bassline and less sharp sounds. One of the "unsung heroes" of the album-as I remember reading in a review-these are indeed 5 and a half minutes of beautiful but underrated music.
As soon as "Possession" ends we find ourselves on chilled ground. "On My Mind" starts in a rather strange way and continues in the same odd vibe until the end. In my opinion one of the best tracks on the album, this is a beautiful electronic musical experience in the best Corsten style.
"Down on Love" is more pop-orientated (thus a bit faster) vocal tune that doesn't raise as high as the previous track, but manages, however, to keep things interesting. All in all a nice tune.
Spicing things up a bit, "Forever" features the same lyrics as "Beautiful" (but with some additional lines), but completely different feeling. Again, a

strong pop influence is present inside a funky electro trance shell. Light track, one to listen to in your car when you're feeling good.
Completely changing the register, "Watch Out" makes an almost 180-degree turn towards the electro sound. Not exactly one of my favourite tunes on the album, but works very nice on the dancefloor.
Next up..."Junk". This track received lots of criticism due to its unusual rap vocals (sung by the famous Guru). It's a track that it's hard to appeal to everyone, but if you give it a chance it will probably grow on you. I did. :) By the way, the Ferry's "Flashover Remix" of this track is awesome and by all

standards better that the original in my opinion.
The album closes to an end in total mayhem, as "Cubikated" storms the place. An incredible techy tune that just keeps the adrenaline rush to the max. Unbelievable dancefloor destroyer. Period.
However, just as "Right Of Way", this album ends with a chilled tune. What "In My Dreams" was for "Right Of Way" is "Freefalling" for "LEF". This track is made of layers of dreams, I couldn't describe it in any other way. Pure bliss in a trademark Corsten sound and again a true example of this trance guru's musical broadness.
Of course, we cannot forget about the bonus track on the album, which in this case is the energetic "I Love You". This track caused a lot of damage on Europe's dancefloors and was highly anticipated by the fans. Due to this facts Ferry decided to include it as a bonus on the Benelux version of the album.

In conclusion a brilliant album, showcasing Ferry's unmatched desire to innovate. From trance to synth-pop to techno to electro to downtempo and even breakbeat, it's all here. Not at all in an eclectic way, but in a very personal, thoroughly-studied approach to music.

Once again, Ferry created an unique piece of art that does what you'd expect only from true art to do: being unexpected.
