The forward-thinking and sadly defunct Dot Records out of Sweden first put out Metamatics’ MIDNIGHT SUN PIG, and it was as breath of fresh air. With its funky rhythms and spunky electro tones, the album is a beam of sunshine in an oftentimes dull world. Metamatics knows the power of combining different tones and moods; for instance, the sad undertones of “Mops” are contrast the fat synths that are the main melody. The title track is slightly slower and more methodical in its direction, while “Spacemang” is buttery smoothness all the way through. But for the most part, the mood is upbeat and catchy: the wobbly outer space satellites of “Man-Q-Neons” or the bouncy “Liquid Gel.” Even when he lapses into simpler patterns (like that of “Ying Yang Mang”), there remains the carefully controlled mood and shape to the track. A nifty album for when you’re feeling down.
