---

Call it progressive house, hard house, tribal, trance or rave, the only thing definite is that the house sound on this album is different than the now-classic first three volumes in this series.

What changed? For one thing, there has been a noticeable backlash to hardcore techno/rave music in the UK. As deejays and audiences grew tired of strictly hard and fast beats, young fans of traditional house music took on the "Do It Yourself" ethos of techno producers and created new forms of house music: not as brutal as techno and not as melodic as mainstream American house. In the US it's been almost the complete opposite. House producers like Cole and Clivilles, Todd Terry and David Morales picked up fresh ideas from the techno invasion. Listen, for example, to Morales' incredible New World Mix of "Mr. Loverman" by Shabba Ranks.

This album opens with Leftfield's "Not Forgotten" for no other reason than it was one of the first truly progressive house tracks to come out of the UK. It broke new ground and started trends immediately. Now over two years old, it is still played in the most progressive and futuristic clubs. Some of the tracks on this album are from the new generation of tiny artist/producer labels that have sprung up in the UK in the last few months. Originally pressed in small quantities, once sold-out they became rare and collectible commodities. "Silence" and "Body" are two such tracks produced by Acorn Arts on their own X-Gate label. Coco Steel and Lovebomb's "Feel It" was also a milestone in the development of the UK progressive house movement.

There are small American independent labels - and even an occasional major - releasing innovative and original house tracks. "Some Lovin," from the new Florida-based Murk Records, has a sound that is instantly recognizable, with fat chunky basslines, that are vaguely reminiscent of the now-legendary 99 Records. Theirs is obviously the sound of the future.

If you are an underground dance-music DJ constantly searching for new rhythms and sounds, you know this is one of the most exciting times for club music. It is almost impossible to keep up with new releases from all the labels that have sprung up in the UK, let alone the rest of Europe. A new generation of Amercian DJs are starting to specialize in sub-genres -- usually playing either tribal, trance or progressive. This project fuses all the new styles into one slammin' album.
