Mariel Ito - Split 2 EP - 30-Jun-06 09:25 AM
While I've found all of the Mariel Ito material to be outstanding, 'Aproach' just might be the understated neo electro anthem that we didn't see coming. An otherworld soundscape, rigid rhythm, and then a gentle, mournful lead that seems to hold you close. A beautiful song that could go for hours, but instead begs for more chunky funk to round it out. Speaking of which, just keep listening...
Toytronic - 03-Nov-05 05:21 PM
Now for a positive note on this niche label: There is a definitive sound that is Toytronic. Glorified video games galore in the early stages, then warmer synths and stonger compositions came into scope as the releases progressed... At this point, the Toytronic sound has matured into a rich, reflective, deeply rooted vibe- you can always hear similarities between artist's releases. This has been the problem for the fashioned listener because there doesn't seem to be much variation in style between artists, and the latest releases may be a bore to them for that reason. But that seems to be a standard set by Cunningham for a Toytronic release- continuity of style. Toytronica is a sound that is not really matched by any other label. And that's the beauty of it. There is a positive energy that flows when listening to most of these tracks- like toys in a kid's hands. It's sorta comforting to know that I can always listen to this label and smile at it's endearing and unique qualities. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Good God! Expanding records is unstoppable! A few words come to mind when listening to expanding music- Beauty, depth, warmth, solitude, reassurance, reflection. Every album is worth the time. The music loves you back!
Anthony Rother - Bodytalk - 13-May-04 05:46 PM
I like to look at this release not as a departure, but a segue for the mingling of genres. These tracks are a suprise to me as well, but it's Cacoon. IMO, these are for the techno-pop (dare I say, clash) jock, not the elektro purist. But all of that aside, Mr. Rother is building bridges, and having fun with pop in the process. Like we've seen from his previous collaborative efforts, he's expanding the netzwerk. Gotta respect that!
James White - Ellis Island - 03-May-04 04:16 PM
Classic electro styling with searing production. For jocks and snobs alike. Deep, warm, bright and broken with precision. Get a second copy for the hi-fi.
