Reviews & Discussion:

Its all about "Hear Dis Sound" in this 12'' - A classic tribal house tune, amazing groove and ultra sub bass line along with a very futuristic vocal...The arrangement is also very smart & unexpected in the way it unfolds. Trademark of the early 2000s quality tribal tech influenced house, trademark sound of the west coast/siesta records... It was a favorite of many DJs including the residents @ fabric, london. One of the best, if not the best h-foundation production to date in my opinion. Dope!
People who have lived through the 90s trance & techno sounds will realize straight away that the feeling on Umek's Carbon Occasions doesn't belong in 2007 but in 1997. This record has the energy, the power and the feeling of love encapsulated in a true ecstasy trip. Although this very feeling belongs totally to the 90s, its very pleasing to see Umek - who has always ensured his productions abilities never came to question - putting these sentiments in a fresh 2007 context.

I very much argue that people who got into electronic music this decade (mostly electro house fans)feel this record. In fact every time i exposed it to any of them the reaction was mediocre, the record sounded unusual for a big percentage of them.

It true that nowadays popular music is characterized by raw, tough and square synth and groove textures - fair enough. However Umek has many production styles. His older Recycled loops groove based tribal techno, his more weird sounding trance techno hybrid like Gatex, his 00s minimal techno influenced tech house/techno sound. However, all these styles have one common denominator: they are undeniably melodic. I also want to try make a guess. I strongly believe that Carbon Occasions is a nostalgic epitome of the melodic patterns he has been working on the last 10 years and that this record didn't just came out of his sequencer as "another record". It's deeply rooted inside his own influences and has total self-awareness of the message which is trying to convey and they way that message is being conveyed. A true, rare melodic, powerful and energetic marvel. It's the kind of record that comes only every 2 years in this electro decade! 10/10

The original is a top choon! Deep, techy , trippy, druggy, melodic, rhytmic and above all, totally spiritual. Spiritual techno, Ibiza style. 5/5 from me. A rare tune and a rare, bright example of quality EDM amongst the unbelievable amount of bad music which gets published digitally and uncontrollably these days (2007). It would be great to see more producers going this way, concentrating more on the silky and soft sonic textures rather that harsh and raw sawtooth style lead and bass sounds.
Pig & Dan - Monjon / Digital Life Aug 05, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
Monjon is a sublime piece of art. Electronic dance music at it's best. I really can find no words for this record. A total masterpiece from the way it sounds to the way it's arranged and from the sounds it incorporates to the way these are manipulated throughout the record. Dark but uplifting and above all mystical (as the previous user cleverly menioned, journeyesque) this for me is a timeless classic. When you talk about techno and the minimal-tech sounds of the 00's this is the track that encapsulates that spirit, HOWEVER it has totally different take on the word "minimal". No silly reverby breakdowns and exaggerated repetitive structures like many other tunes. Everything in this tune is so well placed abd so well reasoned. So up to date (2007). I ve' listened to this tune many times, i cannot find anything i don't like about it, it's simply, perfect!
Paul Kalkbrenner Jul 09, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
Respect to Paul, for his absolutely new take on electronica. He has an extraordinary way to use his sound palette and he managed to turn used trance sounds into a whole new territory. Incredible, proper 21st century EDM. Also, musically genius, his melodies are top notch and the sound of his drums is so up to date. This person sounds like nobody else. Indeed the most inovative European artist of the last years.
Tim J Dec 15, 2006 (edited over 2 years ago)
Along with Mac Zimms, Joff Roach, S'n'S and many more, Tim J is the one of the most important representatives of the powerfull and groovy dutch hardhouse/techno of the middle and late 90's. Generally speaking a very influential producer. Considering the big number of the tracks he produced he managed to maintain high quality in all of them. All his track have a higly original, pumping and underground club sound. Superb.
