Myagi - 3 Years Of Sunrise - 01-Nov-08 02:19 PM
Wow! What can I say about this wonderful album by Canadian breakbeat producer Myagi. Released on Freddy Fresh's Howlin Label (who also host releases by Fatboy Slim, Krafty Kuts, Rory Hoy etc), this LP is just one fantastic cinematic journey into the best in Electronica, Big Beat, Breakz, Electro House, Hip-Hop, Rock and Techno in about 67 minutes. I seriously reccomend you cop this one out, and it also has some really nice tracks with Root Sellers, Brittlestar and up and coming super-gifted rapper, The Conductor Crucified.
Definatley one to watch!
Norman Cook - DJ Mega-Mix Vol. 1 - 20-Oct-08 10:48 AM
This record was really well ahead of it's time! This was released when Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim), was still in Indie group The Housemartins, and this influenced hundreds of turntablist cut-cup records (such as Coldut's Beats + Pieces).
The reason this never got released was due to the heavy amount of samples in it (dialogue from Doctor Who, Batman, The Jungle Book, and lots of familiar bronx breaks samples), and got bootlegged to death (under the name of Norman Housemartin!).
On to the record itself. In my ears, the main part sounds a heck of a lot like the Inspector Gadget theme, and Norm incorporates loops of him doing some turntablism (a thing that he almost dosen't do nowerdays), and the other side features the same track, but with Norm himself rapping (badly) with future Beats International member, MC Wildski!
Overall, if anyone can find it, it's definatly worth it as this (along with Double Dee and Steinski's Lesson's series), is one of the most influential cut and paste records ever.
Various - Big Beach Boutique 2 - The Movie - 12-Jul-08 02:22 PM
This probably has to be one of the most famous DJ gigs of all time. In front of 250, 000 people, Norman Cook spins some great Funky House, Deep House, Big Beat, and . . . er . . . All Saints!!!
This DVD shows the whole 90 minutes (that had to be cut off by the police, otherwise it would have been two hours), but he manages to pull of a (mostly) great set of tunes. Starting with the more upfront stuff like Tim Deluxe's "It Just Won't Do", to later going into more deep, and progressive territory around track 9. He mixes the tracks pretty well (most of the time), and the crowd and Fatboy Slim himself are having a brilliant time. People who are expecting Big Beat are going to be dissapointed as this is a pretty Big Beat lite set (with the exception of Mint Royale's "Sexiest Man In Jamaca" and Fatboy's own "Right Here, Right Now")
One big flaw though is, that the needle skips on a couple of the tracks, and the DVD editors forgot to re-edit the set to remove them, speaking of editing, the actual editing of the crowd and Norman is superb.
Overall, a nice set with a mixture of both Upfront and Deeper House music from the early 2000's.
Various - On The Floor At The Boutique - 10-Jul-08 11:43 AM
After purchasing the first "On the Floor At The Boutique" CD by Fatboy Slim, I was so impressed by it, and wanted to try out another CD from the series, so while shopping in Edingburgh, I found this great CD from the same series, mixed this time by the Midfield General. While Fatboy Slim's CD went for straight up, upfront Big Beat, Acid House, and Party Classics, Damian Harris (Midfield General) goes for an eclectic rollercoaster showcasing different styles and different eras.
We begin with Motown, then go from late-80's rap, to Drum and Bass, to Big Beat to House, to Electronica to Techno and back to Funk and Soul within the space of 70 minutes, and yes, the tracks and the mixing are top-notch too!!!
If you liked Fatboy Slim's Boutique CD, or just an eclectic no genre-restriction CD, this is highly reccomended.
DJ Tonka - Feel Phun-Ky EP - 16-May-08 01:54 PM
Here is some really phat 90's disco house music here provided by DJ Tonka. Feel is filled with rap and diva samples over a classic piano loop with a bassline to die for. Phun-Ky on the otherhand samples De La Soul's "Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays", and is full of scratching and techno synths reminisent of Fatboy Slim (who used to play it on his DJ sets). A nice duo of funky 90's disco party house, if you are into that sort of thing.
