Various - Memento (Music For And Inspired By The Film) - 22-May-06 07:01 AM
This album is a fun way to market the soundtrack. From the Epic Ambient scores of David Julyan, too the downtempo grooves of Thievery Corp. and Monc. This release is a pretty good one.
As far as a Soundtrack though, we all know that all the tracks on here that aren't David Julyan (besides Bowie and Monc) are just fillers to help sell the CD and really don't fit the mood of the picture. -_-
AFX* - Analord 11 - 08-Dec-05 03:39 AM
This is one of the better releases of the Analord set. A1 starts off nice and glitchy, with a ridiculous tempo that wouldn't sound right if it weren't an RDJ track.
Now B1 is the highlight track, I believe RDJ was feeling a 1992 retro techno vibe when compiling this track because it sure has that cheez-ball techno vibe, but of course with the glitchy idm sounds that give it the APHEX (AFX) signature.
B2 is a lot more on the ambient laid-back side, with an interesting murky melody. Not as good as the first 2 tracks.
OVERALL: An excellent release in the series and probably on my top 3.
Aphex Twin - 26 Mixes For Cash - 26-Nov-05 04:30 AM
This album shows that RDJ is the only one that can actually remix a song and make it sound *nothing* like the original. I love the entire CD, i definentely have favorite tracks leaning on the second CD though. I'll just go through the tracks....
The Beatnik song 'Une Femme N'est Pas Un Homme' is remixed beautifully and sounds nothing like the original other than the melody which is AFX'd out. The glitched beat is amazing here.
The Philip Boa & The Voodoo Club song 'Deep in Velvet' is also an amazing glitched out track that implements RDJ's acidic/analog sounds =).
The 808 State song 'Flow Coma' sounds like a remix of the Chemical Brothers back when they were The Dust Brothers sampled with early 90's Prodigy. The melody is pricless, and the acid sounds are up there with actual Aphex releases.
The Windowlicker mix is by far the more minimal track on here, but is amazing and retains that bouncy sound with the glitchy melodies and samples. THE COWBELL ROCKS =)
The Baby Ford song 'Normal' has an amazing acid approach with a techy-breakbeat backing, and occasionally a techno-esque sound.
Overall this is pretty much an Aphex release, and even if you don't like the originals, I promise you that your messedup techy ears will be satisfied that they are ripped apart.
The only track I wasn't happy with was the Philip Glass song 'Heroes', why did he ruin the song =( maybe it's more of a statement more than anything else.
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker - 25-Nov-05 03:33 AM
If you want a hit single that RDJ has put out that ACTUALLY sounds like him, this would be it. Of course Aphex Twin has quite a diverse line but this is closest to his sounds.
You got the more accessible (listening wise) track like 'Window Licker' which has the booty bass-sound to go along with the glitched out beats and samples, and not to mention an amazing vocalized melody (I wonder if that's RDJ). Then ya got his 'equation' track that is his more experimental, abstract approach which we've been hearing since after his ambient phase toned down. And you have 'Nannou' which i honestly believe the band 'múm' got their initial sound from. It has the good old clicks that all us Glitcheez like to hear, accompanied with his childish melodies created for a demonic baby or something, this is for sure the IDM_esque track on this release.
In my opinion I would use this cd as a real test listener for the sound of that time period that RDJ was interested in. A Superb marketing and artistic release.
Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy - 25-Nov-05 03:32 AM
This is definentely the more accessible cd Aphex Twin has put out --- as far as a wider audience goes. Songs like Come To Daddy with its industrial-aggro approach, and then there are songs like 'Flim' and 'IZ-US' which bring out the more simple child-like melodies with trippy breaks that RDJ loves to fluff around with. Of course the more Aphex sounding song in here is 'Bucephalus Bouncing Ball' with it's off the wall meldoy and IDM flair. The other closest track to his IDM, Abstract approach is the mummy mix of 'Come to Daddy'.
This album is amazing and is a great addition to Aphex Twin's line, but sadly it misinterprets his work and many people may come off assuming that this is his sound, when in fact it's almost a side-note release that went HUGE.
Get it if your a fan or like some diverse tracks, and if you want to get into the Aphex Twin stuff be sure to check out his actual albums.
Overall an amazing release =)
