Ubartmar.com* - Macrometasomakosmos - 08-Aug-07 08:54 AM
It's 2 AM, and I'm listening to track 89 of Macrometasomakosmos, trying to figure out how the hell I'm going to explain what I've just heard...

To review this album isn't easy, since all tracks are divided in parts of 33 or 54 seconds.
The best way to listen to this album, is to see it as an inconsistent whole, to see the content as one, even though it is so varied. Or something like that.
Macrometasomakosmos has all the sounds a typical goa-song has. Some 303’s, sometimes Eastern sounding instruments, hypnotic voice samples, a kick, some breaks, … But I’ve never heard something like what Ubar Tmar does with it. Sometimes you can dance to it, a few seconds later you just have to stop and let it overwhelm you. He erases the boundaries of psychedelic music. It’s like he invented the wheel in a world with no bikes or cars.

Macrometasomakosmos takes you to all kind of places, places where sometimes you can chill out, and places where your thoughts run into overdrive because of all the noises that are being blasted towards you. If you take music seriously you will be amazed. This is psychedelic music made even more psychedelic. The rabbit hole goes deeper down than you think.

Minimalistic, that's what I think about this one. It starts great with a feelgood track of Astral Projection, but after GNOTR's Octofunk it stops to interest me. It all sounds so repetitive to me, and what a dissapointing track of Electric Universe!
The second disc starts rather good, with a dark slow melodic track of Man With No Name, but the rest just isn't worth listening. Michael Dog & D.I.M.O. try to save the previous crap with a more happy tune but it doesn't work, the damage is already done.
Tracks # 1, 3, 4 & 5 of the first disc are the only one worth having, but you can find them at other - better - compilations. And I recommend you check them out before buying this one.
I may sound pessimistic, but goa and psytrance have much more to offer than this.

Blink-182 - Take Off Your Pants And Jacket - 07-Aug-07 09:59 PM
Even though I bought this when I was a rebelling 13 year old to scare away my mom (didn't work by the way), I still like this album. Don't care whether it is punkrock, poppunk, garagecrap or whatever, this is pure nostalgia for me.
Most lyrics are about broken hearts ('Story Of A Lonely Guy'), love in general and the insecurities of it ('First Date', 'Roller Coaster', ...), or just random subjects like being pissed off because you don't get so many christmas presents as other people ('Happy Holidays, You Bastard'. Great lyrics on this one). The riffs are easy, the lyrics are childish, this is exactly what you can expect from this band. Oh wait, there is one serious song: 'Stay Together For The Kids', where Tom and Mark are singing about a broken home. Ends with a tiny cliché piano solo, and does the trick.

Yesyes, this is the soundtrack of the puberty!

Astral Projection - The Astral Files - 07-Aug-07 03:30 PM
This is the CD which started my passion for goa. When the first seconds of 'Ionized' begin you can already hear and feel the typical sound AP had; smooth, layered melodic tunes that keep you floating. Bombastic, but still family friendly. Kind of..

Tracks that really stand out on this album are 'Free Tibet' with the broken voices and 'Maïan Dream'. All-time classics like Kabalah, Enlightened Evolution and Ionized are also represented on this disc and need no further introduction.

If you don't have this album then it's because either you already have all this songs on compilation albums, or because you think goa is a place in India. In that case, go & buy it, it's easy to catch, cheap, and you won't be dissapointed.

Very good compilation. Starts with a hardcore acid sounding track of Guidance, but don't let that scare you, goa fan! It fits. Next is "Water Margin" from Lunar Asylum, which reminds me of some film with Godzilla-like monsters I saw: the first minutes it sounds like a little dinosaur is trying to get out of his egg, and at the end the mother is calling it! Great track with great use of the acid sound (it makes me think about dinosaurs, wtf!). Next songs are good too, with classics from X-Dream and Doof. The whole CD is mixed but really feels like one part.
This is something for goa trance lovers :-)
