Mescalinum United - vs. Evil (A New Level) - 21-Jun-07 10:03 AM
I bought this record when it came out in 1993. It was always one of "those" records I had hard time placing into a set because of the style of the track. It reminds me of Aphex Twin quite a bit and it is great for those athmospheric, moody electro sets.
I still haven't figured out the popularity of this record though, maybe I just can't hear the "ingenuity" or originality of the track. Sure, it is good in its own right no doubt about it but beyond that, not a chance.
In fact I was more less disappointed of this record back then but for some strange reason i have been holding on to it for all these years which is why mine is still in almost unplayed condition. Maybe the reason for keeping this piece is in the dazzling radiant day-glo green color the vinyl bears, who knows..

Spicelab - The Spirit Of Fear - 17-Jan-07 11:31 PM
One of those few records in which every track is excellent.

To me the real stand out title has to be "Hyperspice".
With its 9:18 min duration it might be slightly over the top in today's standards, but there's constantly so much going on that you will not get bored and 'oh how much energy it has!! Plenty of crunchy analogue sounds with a death defying distorted kick drum that keeps on chewing on the background, locking you in a weird mental state while the surrounding strobos are flashing. There is also a regular kick drum in conjunction with the monster-kick creating a unique rhythm sensation. The crispy 303 and the siren-like sounds will definitely keep in you on your toes until the soothing, positive organ melody steps in sending you floating... until the kick-drum-from-hell returns bashing the non-dedicated to pieces! Consider yourself warned.
The title track "The Spirit Of Fear" is more of a laidback song and has that certain futuristic and very typical Oliver Lieb athmosphear to it. It isn't a bad track, but in all of its typicality it doesn't offer you much.
S.Y.N.C. is a faster track with addicting 303 line and a variety of analogue sounds that are very familiar from the "Quicksand EP".
"Ant Attack" is the second stand out track for me. It has a cool sub-bass sound combined with break beat and has the typical early 90's german trance "chill out" part around the middle of the track with a nice melody.

In all, this was yet another quality piece from O.Lieb, maybe not as big as "Quicksand EP" (HH010) but much better than "Spicelab EP" (HH007) in my opinion.

T. Vee - U Are A Sucker / Beautiful Symphony (Remixes) - 05-Apr-06 06:13 AM
While most of the Rave 55 releases always had a weird bunch of useless (and usually boring) remixes of the same track, then i guess this baby was a rare exception to the rule.

The earlier mixes of "U are a sucker" (titled "crazy" and "wild" on cat# R.55019/020) were already amazing and energetic tunes in itself. However, the "Incredible Kide Remix" at 144BPM blew the roof off! Hell, it disintegrated the whole damn house to pieces!! Westbam played this in late '92 on his radio mix at the "Atlantis" rave in Helsinki, Finland.
It is hard to find so much straight forward yet controlled energy and such a intriguing vocal sample in such a simple track like this. If you can get ahold of this release you'll figure out what i mean. The abovementioned "crazy" mix of "You are a sucker" was re-released some while ago, but (to my knowledge) this version hasn't been. Highly recommended piece of history right here for the real old school tekkno/hardcore heads. It might sound a bit dated now, but compared to all the compressed modern "techno" crap that's coming in from all directions this will not give in.
Records might come and go in and out of collections, but to me this is one of those "suckers" i'll hold on 'til grave.

Colone - Acid Science Trax Vol. 2 - 01-Apr-06 08:15 AM
All tracks are great, including those short acid fill-in track though it is not as raw as vol. 1 was. Anyway, the real stand out track for me is "D-9-5" which has a spooky yet friendly athmosphere to it that is hard to describe. Perfect example of smart use of 303, perfectly matching bassline and shuffle rhythm.
"Phasematic" is hypnotic 303/707(?) tune that goes on and on and on varying most every aspect of the TB.

This record rocked at the new year's rave in 1992!!

Various - 6200 Volume One - 01-Apr-06 05:54 AM
I cant believe i'm the first one sending comments for this masterpiece?
This is the record that defined the word "tekkno" for me back in 1992 and it is still one of the most precious records in my collection. All four tracks are pure classics in their own field ranging from acid, trance to bangin monotone german techno.
"Psycho green" is a fine example of 303 combined with eerie trance athmosphere and ingenious melody while "Tribute" is by far the best trance masterpiece i've ever heard, simple yet complex in itself with various elements that work seamlessly together. B-side starts off with "Mental breakdown" which is the scariest track of this record. Last but by no means least comes "Force B" with pounding monotone beat and sounds. These tracks work best in dark arena full of smoke and stobetubes.
