Kristine* - Perfect Beat - 30-Sep-08 02:23 PM
This sounds very dated, and the basic production and keyboard skills generally make the tracks quite lifeless. There are a few ok songs here but Kristine's vocals are a far cry from her genuine 1994 material on Champion / Club Tools. The bonus remix of Tonite is far superior to the original, but the remixes of Perfect Beat are instantly disposable. I love her later stuff but this release is disappointing, and purely for completists only.
Various - This Is Only A Test! - 17-Sep-08 03:26 PM
A very strong if rather commercial double 12" set. Arguably the Deee-lite medley is far superior to the DMC one, as it's very smooth, yet achieved by edits alone. Pet Shop Boys' "So Hard" is quite intense due to the creative use of multiple edits, and the Grid "A Beat Called Love" uses sections of "Intergalactica" in the intro/outro. Nicely packaged and the usual high quality pressing you'd expect from Joseph and Art, even though it's on coloured vinyl! The tracks compliment each-other well.
S'Express - Theme From S'Express (21st Century Remixes) - 22-Feb-08 05:19 AM
Worth tracking down for the King Roc remix alone, this 3-tracker keeps far more of the vibe (and samples) from the original classic version rather than the "Return Trip" excursions. If you want a revitalised take rather than a full-blown reinterpretation then these mixes are for you! King Roc are masters of the A-side here, and as it's the best mix then that's perfectly fitting (for better sound quality). With lots of additional structure and dubs this works a treat, whether on the car stereo or in a retro set at your local club. Punx Soundcheck deliver a slightly more electro-minimal version, and some of the samples sound a little cheap/tinny, whilst the Simon Acetone revamp adds evil sub-bass and loops the original into a rather difficult and club-unfriendly monster (though it's still an interesting revamp). These 2 occupy the B-side and as such are far quieter pressings (at 33rpm), but still pretty good quality.
Secession - The 12" Collection - 22-Feb-08 05:02 AM
Two bits of additional track info for any Secession collector. "Radioland" (Full Length) is simply the album version (as it also appeared under this name on UK 12" single), and "Promise" (Razormaid Mix) is not by Razormaid label atall. Joseph Watt/Art Maharg did do Razormaid extended mixes of "The Magician" and "All The Animals" (also included as bonus tracks here) but only 'Techno Pop' USDJ remix service did a version of "Promise" (that disc is also included in this discography).
Robin Scott - Pop Y2K (Part 4) - 18-Feb-08 05:48 AM
Unlike no2 in this series of 12 inchers this Olmec Headz reinterpretation is very dubby, with only tiny snippets of treated vocals low in the mix. Approaching breakdown points you get a time-stretched "Activate it" which is quite effective. The b-side is the same track minus any vocals, but as the a-side has so little anyway it doesn't really add to the release. Much much harder feel than their other remix on no2, which was pure Euro-Trance. This is same genre but faster BPM and more relentless. The keyboards are entirely different too, so you are getting a very different mix on this release. Not bad, but not great either!
