Mark Stewart - Edit - 28-Jul-08 08:44 PM
I usually loathe the overused phrase "return to form", but if any album deserves it then it must be Edit, Mark Stewart's best album in years. When everybody is looking back musically instead of forwards, it makes sense that the old skool of the On U Sound gang sounds fresher than all the "MySpace-flavour-of-the-week" newcomers. The album stands almost alone as the antidote to an otherwise abysmally bland music year. Stand out tracks are the fidget house of 'Freak Circus", and the female vocals of "Secret Suburbia" and "Mr You're A Better Man Than I".
Laibach - Krst Pod Triglavom - Baptism - 19-Sep-07 03:49 AM
The music on this album was made for a theatre piece done by Gledališče Sester Scipion Nasice, a theatre group belonging to the same Neue Slovenische Kunst movement as Laibach. Perhaps due to its function as a theatre score it is more diverse than most of Laibach's other albums.
"Krst Pod Triglavom" is Laibach at their best. Although some songs are re-workings of earlier material, the album marked a considerable step forward for the band in song arrangement and production technique. Vocals are applied in a more subtle way than before. The repetitive vocal samples on tracks like "Jagerspiel", "Herzfeld" and Koza (Die Haut)" add a new, hypnotic quality to the band's music. Not only is the album the perfection of their early phase, in which they incorporated themes and samples of classic film music (Bernhard Hermann, Maurice Jarre, et al), but also the end of it. After this album Laibach became more poppy and less interesting, changing their concept by doing (supposedly) ironic covers of cheesy pop songs.
Various - Hardcore Volume 1 - 18-Jul-07 12:42 PM
Thanks to Public Enemy et al, British hip hop was overlooked at the time. This seminal album is in desperate need of a re-release!
A3 is the best track by far that has aged remarkably well. Its fast pace is demonstrative of a time when house and hip hop weren't so segregated. B4 is one of the first ever Asian Underground tracks. A2, B2 & B3 are also well produced with interesting sounds.
